Unfortunately, this change doesn’t come because it would require enough people to be dissatisfied enough to demand change—and that number doesn’t grow because the system is made to have people believe in America’s moral credit. America has no moral credit.

But to actualize freedom from oppression, America needs to do its own form of wake work, as Sharpe describes—that would require action. This action can’t just come from those of the oppressed who have been generationally fighting.

People love to use being “woke,” and you see people using the hashtags in support of another’s oppression as if they are placing a pin on their chest to symbolize that they are not like the others.

I find the framing of Sharpe’s wake work to be beautiful, but when I try to imagine something new for America, I see this as an impossible dream. I find that living in the wake is acceptance that America will not change and one must simply find a way to exist in this wake. Depressing, right?

Milo recently asked me my thoughts on America with what’s all going on, and I’ve been pondering it. I’m starting to see America through an Afropessimistic lens. I’m finding my social ideology to be somewhere between Christina Sharpe’s In the Wake and Afropessimism.

Especially when they aren’t a white man.

This just got me thinking. I’m finding it hard to believe that folks who have landed on being “central,” “neutral,” and “having friends on both sides” are so lost with the plot that they are, in some ways, worse and more harmful than those who openly support fascists.

He finally landed on the “I have friends on both sides,” and that he finds himself in the middle.

He struggled with what I said and admitted to not having the knowledge or tools to really get into a deep conversation with them. He told me, “Honestly, if you weren’t dumbing things down, I wouldn’t be giving these things critical thought.”

Long story short, I basically told him that by not combating his friends’ views on who Kirk was, he was condoning it and basically being their token black guy that they could point to as a scapegoat. You're being a Candace without getting a check.

Back in the days when we were kids playing Smash, and I would say something deemed gay, and he would go, “Pause. Y-, you didn’t say no homo.” So he’s like a brother.

It often worries me that his algorithm is fucked with manosphere nonsense that I have to combat—but I do, because that’s my boy and, like I mentioned before, we go way back.

My response to him was that those friends should no longer be friends—posthaste.

Now, my friend is not engaged in politics at all. Nor am I. To give you a bit of background on him: he’s your average straight guy, a few years of community college.

The reason I’m mentioning this is because I was talking to a friend who I grew up with, and we ended up talking about politics. He brought up that he has friends who were upset about the demise of chuckle-fuck Kirk because they viewed him as a good person.

To preface this lil rant, I grew up and went to school on the west side of Chicago (Garfield Park), which is predominantly Black. This didn’t really change for me until I went to high school up north, which was more diverse.
