Someone recently tried on me the defence that "Oxford isn't the only University with these issues".
You would have hoped they could do better than that.

I have now been warning for over 3 years of Oxfordβs neglect of its duty of care to both academics and students, in relation to both zero hours contracts and sexual predation. Latest Private Eye is again on the case. Can the ostrich defence continue much longer?

05.03.2026 14:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes it would need serious guardrails, which is why it will be very challenging if even possible. And Iβd stipulate that I canβt see how it could be provided by a profit-seeking or ad-funded platform. It may well be more baby than bathwater.

05.03.2026 14:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I don't think we are miles apart. I took the thread as a suggestion that there could be scope for some hand-holding between sessions but not as a substitute for human therapists.

So many of us are not viscerally opposed to AI : we simply donβt believe the claims for it by those over invested in it.
A reckoning is coming soon it seems.
Good thoughtful thread that feels itself like a form of therapy. And maybe there is a genuine use case for a benign AI if it could be developed and made safer.

Thatβs only around Β£15m per Reform MP so far. A great deal cheaper than buying US Senators.

I'm disappointed that Trump hasn't unearthed the following quote often (mis?)attributed to Churchill.
"You can depend upon the Americans to do the right thing.
But only after they have exhausted every other possibility."
And who knew they had so many missiles and drones? As if that very fact weren't one of the main pretexts for this latest adventure.

With a daughter still at school I do rather miss textbooks.
Agreed. But they arenβt there to protect the US from incoming. I only meant that itβs barely appropriate to call it a war when one side faces so little real jeopardy. Hegseth doesnβt even want to talk about the 6 casualties.

04.03.2026 15:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes, but the only US targets they have are ones that the US chooses to locate within range.

I seem to recall Bill Hicks pointing out, in relation to an earlier US excursion, that "a war is when you have TWO armies fighting".
What we are witnessing here is merely target practice.

Good, and thank you.
Trump likes a medal. Could we persuade you to strike one to recognise his ongoing contributions to EU unity?
Hint for headline writers: if you have to tell us that they were once "senior figures" it might just possibly not be much of a story.
I don't doubt they will fit right in.
Only eight days to go! Meanwhile, thereβs been a lovely review in @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/culture/book...
04.03.2026 09:41 β π 27 π 5 π¬ 2 π 0True, though some such as Ofcom have considerable resources that they deploy to little effect. There are other reasons why βindependentβ regulation performs so poorly in the UK. For instance, does Govt appoint the right people and genuinely encourage them to be robust?
04.03.2026 09:42 β π 3 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0I know what you mean and agree, but equally only around 3% of world population would ever migrate. Vast majority prefer to stay close to where they were born. Which also underlines how exaggerated are the fears, as long as we work harder on avoiding the shocks that cause forced migration.
