This IS good, it’s a better read on the issues facing universities than the vast majority of stuff one sees in the national press. I don’t know how this Manc outfit does it, but it’s really impressive.
This is excellent reporting which deftly demonstrates the weaknesses and loopholes in Companies House, before you even get to opaque trusts in overseas territories!
Investigative journalism isn’t as glamorous as they say.
Fantastic reporting from Moya and @robbiejourno.bsky.social on the Glasgow fire.
5 days left, 50 to go.. We're so close to launching a new @millmedia.bsky.social publication in Leeds.
Please share to get us over the line and spread the word among talented journalists who might want to join the team.

Well played
A tax barrister sued me personally for £8m for libel after we linked him to a tax avoidance scheme.
Today the High Court struck out the claim, granted summary judgment, and ruled it was a SLAPP. The judgment is highly critical.
We've won the UK's first ever SLAPP suit - acting for @danneidle.bsky.social - and made some really important law protecting the right to call out barristers whose misconduct facilitates aggressive tax avoidance.
"Renaker received the majority — some £600m — of the £983m lent out by the GMCA."
Which helps to explain this incredibly Manchester-centric distribution. As @jackdulhanty.bsky.social explains in his piece today.
Good q. Not directly. I guess it's hard to measure that because you actually don't know whether these recipients COULD have got money from other lenders. I find the % going to one company bizarre.
"Burnham has consistently called for greater government accountability... Having to be forced by journalists to release a report into how the GMCA lends hundreds of millions of pounds of public money to developers would appear at odds with that".

⏰ We’re into the final stretch of our campaign to launch a new newspaper for West Yorkshire - and we’re now at 433 pledges.
In this week’s newsletter, @djstimms.bsky.social explains where things stand and why this final push matters.
I can’t seem to upload it here but I’ve made a little video about what happened at the hearing

Less than a week left ⏰
A month ago we said: if 500 people backed the idea, we’d launch a new local newspaper for West Yorkshire based in Leeds.
Overnight, we’ve just surpassed 400 pledges 💫
That means we’re within touching distance - but nothing is guaranteed yet.
Claudio Di Giovanni is suing me, @coramazov.bsky.social and @millmedia.bsky.social because we are refusing to take down a great piece of investigative journalism published by @londonermag.bsky.social. He also pursued Cormac personally and sent bizarre threats.

Update on our libel case 🚨 - the businessman suing us didn’t turn up to the high court for the first hearing. Judge was unimpressed with his medical evidence.
Fighting these threats to journalism in the UK is frustrating and expensive but we will win.

408 pledges out of 500 needed
six days to go to support local journalism
leeds.ghost.io/welcome-to-l...
One week to go to see if a new independent news outlet for Leeds and West Yorkshire will actually happen - if you'd like to see it and haven't yet pledged support for @leedsnewlocalpaper.bsky.social, please consider doing so.
#LocalJournalismMatters
Leeds folk, just wanted to put this on your radar. The Birmingham/West Midlands version (The Dispatch) is doing good and interesting work hereabouts.

Anyone in #leeds I'd recommend taking a look at the new local newspaper from the folks behind #TheMill in Manchester:

Given what you wrote last week, maybe it should be.
Lol.
Thanks man
An update from @joshih.bsky.social on our libel case

This is excellent and important work.
350 pledges. 150 to go.
If we reach it, we launch 🚀
42 fires in listed or significant buildings. That really is a lot.
Calum writes: "I've been chipping away at this ever since joining The Bell. The idea is for it to be the definitive record of important public buildings that have gone up in flames in this city. I’ve so far found 36 by looking at the last 25 years alone."
Yes, although frankly some of these buildings are even more treasured / important.
Absolutely scandalous - and in one of our most beautiful cities.
