Edvard Munch's famous work "The Scream" depicts a genderless figure on a pier, with a blue-white face distorted in a gaping expression of horror. The figure's hands are on either side of the face, perhaps clutching the head or covering the ears. Swirls of blue and red tones in the background depict water and the blood-red sunset of Munch's description. There are two other figures walking on the pier in the distance, but their features are indistinguishable.

The United States incarcerates its citizens more than any other country. Mass incarceration disproportionately impacts the poor and people of color and does not make us safer. EJI is working to end our misguided reliance on over-incarceration. The U.S. has 5% of the world’s population but nearly 25% of its incarcerated population. Our spending on jails and prisons reached $87 billion in 2015, an increase of 1000% from the $7.4 billion spent in 1975. In 1972, there were only 200,000 people incarcerated in the United States. Today that number has grown to 2.2 million.

Several members of Pussy Riot have been imprisoned for their activism over the past 13 years. Two days ago -- on September 15, 2025 -- five members were sentenced in absentia to a range of 8 to 13 years in Russian prison for their anti-war performances.

Jacob Lawrence grew up around and was mentored by primarily Black artists -- for example, taking after-school art classes at the Utopia Children's Center in Harlem. He worked to support his family during the Depression & began painting scenes of heroism in Black American life. Read more here
