Media coverage of Gaza has plummeted. So today on @thenation.com, we're doing something pretty special: we're only running pieces by people in and from Gaza.

We're calling it "A Day for Gaza." You can find links to all of the incredible pieces here. Please read! www.thenation.com/article/worl...

The myth of the male bumbler How manipulative men use one of our culture's most muscular myths — that men are clueless — and weaponize it into an alibi

This article is almost 10 years old but remains evergreen.

"The line on men has been that they're the only gender qualified to hold important jobs and too incompetent to be responsible for their conduct."

“….There's nothing surprising about that (a bunch of rich and powerful dudes going to child rape island) to any woman you might pull off the street.

“A sociologist I used to teach years ago did research into how masculinity couches bonding in transgression: frat boys breaking rules, groups of men going to strip bars together, etc.  A darker version of "boys will be boys" that we now recognize as the bigger problem it is.

“The rape of children here accomplishes: 1. complete dominance of the weak, 2. Belonging to a secret club, 3. Breaking the ultimate social taboo. All of those are in service of ego and the worst expression of how they perceive masculine bonding.

“To me it's even more upsetting and gross because the collective experience of rape, the performance in front of other men, is titillating to them more than the actual act is. but this is all a familiar dimension to men in our culture that women recognize. It just usually doesn't take this extreme an expression.”

From my SIL, who teaches gender studies at a fairly prestigious (but unnamed, because of assholes) university:

When I eventually run for office, my platform will be single issue. The nationalization and dissolution of Elsevier and Springer.

Sure, the only people who vote for me will be academics. But by god will their support be fanatical.

The naked complacency of people looking at ICE and saying it couldn't happen in the UK. It has happened here. NI shows multiple examples of rules on the use of lethal force being ignored and covered up. And if anyone has the temerity to seek justice, the rule of law matters less for some victims:

One reason that X remains a ‘core’ news and information app is that vital utilities and public bodies treat it as a central communication tool with the public.

Gardai, buses, trains, weather alerts, airports, councils etc.

If something urgent happens, they treat X as a primary platform.
