The geopolitical landscape is shifting—closely monitoring future developments.

This mirrors China's actions in the South China Sea, where it militarized islands after gradual encroachment.

The similar tactics could be applied in the Yellow Sea, encroaching on the PMZ to achieve strategic objectives.

The PRC is likely exploiting this leadership vacuum to further territorialize the Yellow Sea, aiming to limit South Korea's access and control the area’s sea and airspace.

Key South Korean military positions remain vacant due to resignations and ongoing investigations related to Yoon's impeachment trials, weakening the nation's response to China's actions.

This recent installation comes after a pause in protests from South Korea, likely due to internal political instability following President Yoon Suk-yeol's martial law declaration on December 3, 2024.

China's justification?

The steel framework is presented as a "fishing support facility." However, South Korea suspects this is part of China's broader strategy to assert territorial control over the Yellow Sea.

The PMZ, established in 2000 to resolve fishing & oil exploration disputes between South Korea & China, prohibits non-fishing facilities.

Despite this, China has repeatedly installed structures, including 10 buoys since 2014.

On December 2024, South Korean authorities discovered a 164-foot steel framework installed by China in the Provisional Measures Zones (PMZ) of the Yellow Sea.
