Have you ever had to put "death threats" in the Impacts on Progress of Research section of your grant applications? Peers without lived experience of racism who review our work need to understand the extreme contexts we work in without institutional acknowledgement or support.

BREAKING: One of the most important and prominent reporters on the ground in Gaza has been Anas Al Sharif.
He - and several other Al Jazeera journalists - have just been assassinated by Israelis forces whilst in their press tent in central Gaza.
Speechless.

Barely an hour ago, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif warned us all:
βIf this madness doesnβt end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its peopleβs voices silenced, their faces erased β and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.β
Israel just killed him.

In my grief, I neglected to acknowledge that without me asking, Sheila Colla wrote a powerful letter in support of me getting an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. I only learned about it from our friend and colleague Sarah Flicker β€οΈ

When I started researching wild bees, Sheila consistently offered advice. If I needed to vent about academic colleagues, I could count on her for a listening ear (& appropriate amount of justified anger!). When choosing between what is easy & what is right, I often think about what Sheila would do.

I feel so fortunate to have met her 9 years ago, when she co-founded East Enders Against Racism in response to white supremacist posters at Stan Wadlow Park in East York. It was healing to have the opportunity to collaborate on such a response to racism in a park and community I grew up in.

Iβm not ready to talk about Dr. Sheila Colla @savewildbees.bsky.social in the past tense. Her presence and voice are so vivid in my mind. She was the friend who stayed in closest touch with me when I moved from Toronto to Victoria, chatting with me as if I had never left.

Alberta is failing on public health.
In week 24 of the year- also known as epidemiological week-, we accounted for 125 of Canadaβs 221 new measles cases.
That is more than half.
We have the expertise to do better, but the UCP government is weakening our public health system.

cannot overstate how bad this will be for universities at every level, from the financial (intl students pay $$$), logistical (intl grad students teach many courses), productivity (they also do a bunch of research), to more nebulous but still imp things like making campus life vibrant + diverse

It pains me to say this, but if you are not a US citizen, you should not attend scientific conferences in the US, visit US institutions, or otherwise travel to our country.
Right now it's not worth the risk.
Hopefully that will change. If it doesn't, science in the US is sunk anyway.
