Have you ever had to put "death threats" in the Impacts on Progress of Research section of your grant applications? Peers without lived experience of racism who review our work need to understand the extreme contexts we work in without institutional acknowledgement or support.

BREAKING: One of the most important and prominent reporters on the ground in Gaza has been Anas Al Sharif.

He - and several other Al Jazeera journalists - have just been assassinated by Israelis forces whilst in their press tent in central Gaza.

Speechless.

Barely an hour ago, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif warned us all:

β€œIf this madness doesn’t end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased β€” and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.”

Israel just killed him.

β€˜Sheila just went for it’: York University scientist Sheila Colla remembered as a fierce advocate to save wild bees Colla, 43, died Sunday of cancer. She successfully fought for the rusty-patched bumblebee to become the first bee listed as an endangered species in Canada and the U.S.

Please read this beautiful profile of my cherished friend and @yorkuniversity.bsky.social scientist Dr. Sheila Colla @savewildbees.bsky.social in the @thestar.com. www.thestar.com/news/gta/she...

In my grief, I neglected to acknowledge that without me asking, Sheila Colla wrote a powerful letter in support of me getting an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. I only learned about it from our friend and colleague Sarah Flicker ❀️

When I started researching wild bees, Sheila consistently offered advice. If I needed to vent about academic colleagues, I could count on her for a listening ear (& appropriate amount of justified anger!). When choosing between what is easy & what is right, I often think about what Sheila would do.

Sheila was a remarkable friend, colleague, mentor, neighbour, and mother, who gave so much to all of her communities. I looked up to her immensely as a colleague who thought deeply about the way we do science and who we include and uphold. She will be deeply missed. www.gofundme.com/f/support-sh...

And I know that the impact she had on me was just a fraction of the impact she had on the people in her life and so many more beyond them. My heart breaks for all her loved ones, and especially for her husband Mark, and kids Tristan and Rowan.

I feel so fortunate to have met her 9 years ago, when she co-founded East Enders Against Racism in response to white supremacist posters at Stan Wadlow Park in East York. It was healing to have the opportunity to collaborate on such a response to racism in a park and community I grew up in.

That meant the world during the rocky transition when I asked myself daily β€œWhat have I done?” She was also the friend who eased my transition to my York postdoc, taking it upon herself to welcome me to the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change complete with a tour & access to the faculty lounge.

I’m not ready to talk about Dr. Sheila Colla @savewildbees.bsky.social in the past tense. Her presence and voice are so vivid in my mind. She was the friend who stayed in closest touch with me when I moved from Toronto to Victoria, chatting with me as if I had never left.

Alberta is failing on public health.

In week 24 of the year- also known as epidemiological week-, we accounted for 125 of Canada’s 221 new measles cases.

That is more than half.

We have the expertise to do better, but the UCP government is weakening our public health system.

RFK Jr. threatens to bar government scientists from publishing in leading medical journals The health secretary said the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and The Lancet are in bed with pharma.

Going after medical journals is the next step it seems.

Determining where science can be published limits dissemination and limits transparency

cannot overstate how bad this will be for universities at every level, from the financial (intl students pay $$$), logistical (intl grad students teach many courses), productivity (they also do a bunch of research), to more nebulous but still imp things like making campus life vibrant + diverse

It pains me to say this, but if you are not a US citizen, you should not attend scientific conferences in the US, visit US institutions, or otherwise travel to our country.

Right now it's not worth the risk.

Hopefully that will change. If it doesn't, science in the US is sunk anyway.
