I think that overall there's a huge market for "Games with mechanical depth", the issue is that sequels have to be "games with enough mechanical depth and graphical improvements to justify a sequel"

I'd say it's a development thing most of all, with EU5 paradox knew that it was their last chance not to fuck up royally, so they put all the TLC they could into its development and came up with a game that added more mechanical depth without paralyzing itself.

Less attentive developers fail that

CS2 and KSP2 are the games that completely destroyed all optimism in me about Video Games. I'm glad that EU5 isn't a total disaster because otherwise I'd be forced to conclude that nerd game sequels are inherently doomed to fail due to high expectations

I guess it's not so much an issue of the Paradox Mods system as much as City's Skylines' graphics system has absolutely fucked all modularity out of the game.

Also I can't even look a the mods in-game without going through the slow-ass updating process that the game can barely handle

Its kinda wild how Paradox saw how Cities Skylines was able to take advantage of easy and accessible modding to turned an otherwise flawed game into the ultimate sandbox with infinite content, then decided "We should force the sequel to use our undeveloped in-house modding system with no tools"
