here's the event the NZ climate Minister was not released to attend- ]when read with Coughlan's piece, it really underscores the problems internal to National and problems longer term too for NZ-they are obvious but I am suprised there is so little analysis of them www.thepost.co.nz/politics/360...
This, by Thomas Coughlan has become more relevant over time-tension between National's conservative farming faction vs Auckland/urban Nats over climate change may explain why the Climate Minister was denied release for NZ's largest climate event last year www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/...
I submitted on the NZ govt disestablishing our ministry for environment but didn’t have time to share here on Bluesky - far from encouraging efficient democratic decision making the new mega ministry risks further eroding environmental accountability & unlike other Westminster examples, is unwieldy
If life is rushing past & hardly have time to blink let alone make submissions on the tsunami of change rushed through by the NZ govt take a few minutes to speak up for the environment & oppose the rush to subsume environment in a mega dept by WED 11 March www3.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/com...
I am just noting that NZ National confusion over Iran is deeper than just the serious Prime Minister’s leadership failure.
I lost track of the number of parliamentary questions National filed to try and stop a Kurdish refugee & critic of the Iranian regime when Behrouz Boochani sought NZ asylum
This. Is #nzpol opposition listening?
*engaging not enhancing (but it does enhance the book)
it’s such a good read and there is so much for students to learn from - it’s really thoughtful, self effacing and quietly inspiring - what makes it very enhancing is the continual focus on how to make the change you want to see in the world, happen -it’s not all about him but it is about strategy
I can’t tell you how much l’m enjoying @london.gov.uk ‘s Breathe: how to win a Greener world. In the midst of a leadership crisis in NZ, at a time when it feels that cynicism & focus group politics dominates over genuine commitment to change, it’s so refreshing & helpful-can’t recommend it enough.
National had a simple opportunity then when it could have chosen to stand with a critic of the Iranian regime, they didn’t-they chose instead to back Aussie dog whistles to racism-for a party of ‘law & order’ National’s struggling to apply law and order internationally, choosing to back big powers

Their behaviour as an opposition at the time deeply shocked me - it was a relentless barrage of questions that in my view amounted to persecution - it was deeply concerning in my view

I hope NZ government and oppostion unequivocally condemns this act

Might be time for a second edition of Jesson’s classic www.fishpond.co.nz/Books/Only-T...
One thing that has been overlooked in megaministry commentary and with MfE specifically is the withdrawal of funding and policy dev on waste streams, waste minimisation. It’s really important work and NZ stats on landfill, e-waste, lack of recycling infrastructure are frankly, embarrassing.
It makes no sense to rush into a giant centralised government department that merges environment into housing/transport etc. it creates huge transaction costs, taking NZ back years in effective climate and environment action, losing focus, accountability & skills www.theguardian.com/world/2026/f...

4) even in local urban emergencies you have to keep defending democracy
5) students are amazing leaders in a crisis
6) so many people are gracious, kind, creative and courageous in disasters- it’s not resilience- it’s relationality www.jstor.org/stable/26269...
things I learned about disaster recovery
1)They said it takes 15 yrs to rebuild a city+15 billion state funding- they were right
2) no one was held accountable for all the deaths in 1 sub-standard building
3) cities need the vision of arts & Indigenous communities www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3608...
