Yes, the Nazis gave mothers medals, but they got their ideas from American Eugenics. Back in the 1920s, the US awarded them to the “fittest” white families during #pronatalist Fitter Families events at state fairs. The medals said: “Yea, I have goodly heritage” aka were reproductively desirable.

The realities of Romania's #pronatalist scheme was so devastating (so many women dead from illegal abortions, an entire generation of children left at orphanages because parents could not support them) that @margaretatwood.bsky.social said it was one of the inspirations for Handmaid's Tale.
