In 1954, U-M Library made the purchase of the music collection of Jean Auguste Stellfeld, a Belgian musicologist who had amassed one of the most significant music collections in Europe, providing a basis for the U-M Department of Musicology and the study of European music from the 16th century on.

A comprehensive collection of published sheet music that was available in America before 1920.
The Edison Sheet Music Collection features pieces used by the Edison Phonograph Company in selecting music to record. The collection consists of approximately 135,850 pieces that comprehensively document the published sheet music available in America before 1920.

The Women Composers Collection contains approximately 2,800 musical works by more than 700 composers. With the exception of several dozen 18th-century works, the music is almost evenly divided between the 19th and 20th centuries. The scores have been digitized, with many available in HathiTrust.
