UM-Flint’s Neely overcomes tragedy to be named Maize & Blue Distinguished Scholar Tyena Neely kept her eye on her goal of becoming an elementary educator in spite of several life changing setbacks.

💥Tyena is truly inspirational! At age 4, she knew she wanted to be a teacher, and she didn't let tragedies stop her. We love that she's helping to shape our community's future.

Maize & Blue Distinguished Scholar Tupper found a new future at UM-Flint Diane Tupper went back to school to get her bachelor's degree after the death of her husband, graduating along side one of her children.

Maize & Blue Scholar Lyons affirmed her passion for helping others while at UM-Flint Kennedy Lyons has worked as a CNA throughout her time at UM-Flint, and will begin teaching in a local elementary school in Fall 2025.

Kennedy has worked with kids who have special needs since she was 16 and this elementary #education Maize & Blue Scholar will continue that focus after graduating this Saturday.
