Call of the Wilde: Montreal Canadiens fall to San Jose Sharks in wild affair - Montreal | Globalnews.ca The first game of the Canadiens' trip to California was a nightmare defensively as the Sharks were able to create plenty of space on offence to outscore Montreal 7-5.

Here’s the tale of the tape in the Call Of The Wilde for Global Montreal …

Expected goals

Montreal 4.13
SJ 2.98

Dobes GSAE minus 3.55 .... .778 save percentage

Also, trading deadline truths and revelations from a 40 year veteran.

Not with the big boys but all the medium boys out west aren’t throwing in the towel

You don’t make 7 year decisions to find the basement just because you had the second worst goaltending in a season.

The Blues are really missing it in my mind. They’re suddenly in this rebuild, but if they could have gotten a save this season they’d be in the playoffs.

This is way overblown to sell solid strong assets.

Nemec development looks better to me so far

D men ceiling is so hard to know

Just about processing at nhl level

So hard to know

But

04.03.2026 19:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Total agreement. Great add. Bit not for the moon

04.03.2026 19:14 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah but he’s had 30 more games after and they’re not awesome either

And he doesn’t power series wins either

04.03.2026 19:09 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I wonder what the asking is on Simon Nemec.

I think he is gonna figure it out and be pretty damn good.

He has moments where you can see he’s got it but then some days not.

I think that’s gonna swing his way.

So to be fair we are gonna ignore statistics and go with our feelings and ignore statistics

And we are gonna call that fair

So in summary fair is throw away stat. Unfair is use stat

04.03.2026 19:03 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I have liked him. Yes. He is the profile they need.

04.03.2026 19:00 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

How is that fair lol

Fair is the stat that is the stat.

Unfair is to make excuses for him.

I look at all the supposed best options for the Habs and honestly I don’t see any forward or any goalie on the so-called best of list that I like.

I can see some right shot D I like though - Ristolainen or Carlo would be excellent additions.

I hope they stand pat and keep growing from within.

04.03.2026 18:51 β€” πŸ‘ 47    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 9    πŸ“Œ 0

I don’t even think he’s a contract issue. He doesn’t make that much.

I think it’s a holy shit he’s gonna be 38 when it’s done and that could be trauma

04.03.2026 18:45 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I wouldn’t touch Pettersson, if you threw in additional players to take him off your hands.

He’s 27 and aging faster than milk left in the sun.

04.03.2026 18:44 β€” πŸ‘ 51    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 8    πŸ“Œ 0

It’s 6.

04.03.2026 18:37 β€” πŸ‘ 12    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

How many goals do you think Thomas has in the playoffs?

Take a guess. 52 playoff games.

04.03.2026 18:36 β€” πŸ‘ 13    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 7    πŸ“Œ 0

Another Thomas thought - if he’s so amazing, then why would the Blues trade him.

He’s 26.

They don’t think they’re doing an 8 year rebuild in St. Louis, Folks.

Only Sens goalies worse than the Blues.

This is a player choice by the Blues shopping Thomas; not a long rebuild choice.

04.03.2026 18:36 β€” πŸ‘ 28    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 7    πŸ“Œ 0

I like Kadri a lot as a player but he’s got 3 more years left on his deal. He will be 38 when it expires.

He could age out. Look at the 3rd line of the Habs. Aging out ain’t pretty.

04.03.2026 18:33 β€” πŸ‘ 39    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 5    πŸ“Œ 0

He’s just not levelling up in a way that is unlikely to level up.

He’s a bit soft. That’s not likely to change.

While still a candidate to be a good NHL d man , a bit soft makes one touchable

04.03.2026 16:28 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

That line was completely caved in last night in the head to head

04.03.2026 15:33 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Well, don’t know what to tell ya Doug. Those are the numbers. The GSAE is a magnificent stat based on a thorough tracking algorithm

04.03.2026 15:11 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

He has 6 goals in 52 playoff games.

If Hage has 5 goals in his first 52 playoff games, you’d want him shipped to Siberia, not give up 4 assets for him.

04.03.2026 15:10 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 4    πŸ“Œ 0

No, the shutdown line is not good.
Yes, Danault has lost a step.
Yes, all 3 will be gone when contracts end.

04.03.2026 14:47 β€” πŸ‘ 34    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 6    πŸ“Œ 0

I find myself disagreeing with a lot of assessment by respected reporters recently.

No, Dach is not the answer with Suzuki.
No, Thomas is not worth 4 top assets.
No, Dobes is not a reliable goalie.
Yes, Newhook is a top six candidate.
No, Reinbacher is not an untouchable.
Yes, Hage is.

Montreal 4.13

Dobes GSAE minus 3.55 .... .778 save percentage .... sub optimal

I've been saying for a long while and I will continue to say it....

Like to see Newhook get a look on the top line.

I think he profiles well there with his speed, but they probably don't because the line is a bit small overall then.

04.03.2026 05:34 β€” πŸ‘ 23    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 4    πŸ“Œ 0

Frankly I like it.

If you're not gonna protect your goalie when he gets charged repeatedly, who are you gonna protect.

04.03.2026 05:32 β€” πŸ‘ 25    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Holy moly, these guys are exciting.

04.03.2026 03:39 β€” πŸ‘ 19    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

They pounce fast offensively, but don't have much attention to detail defensively.

Take the over, unless the goalies are lights out.
