It is very funny that this Pope is just going to get jerseys from now on. Everyone decided that's what this Pope likes and that is it. It's like if your grandmother got you a puzzle for Christmas one year and you said you liked it so your entire extended family is like "oh that's the puzzle kid"

Is it ‘My wife and I’ or ‘Me and my wife’? Anyway, we just robbed a liquor store

Right, they keep overturning the traditional authorities, from the Jedi to the monarchs and the parliament

They have no real tradition of service, just a couple of decades of genocide and deterrence with massive firepower. And they keep losing their best pilots and generals and admirals to the rebels anyway

I’ve told this story before but: at Michigan State, the richest kid I met had a family who owned a large regional dairy company — literally “the local milk people.” At Penn, even more than Chicago, you start bumping into the global mega rich. I wasn’t ready for that as a first-gen college kid.

I liked all of my schools in different ways, but the order mattered a lot. I wouldn’t have liked Chicago for undergrad (“fun goes to die”) or finishing my PhD (some departments are famous for taking forever to award a degree). And Penn would have freaked me out at 17 by how rich Ivy kids can be.

Michigan State for undergrad, then UChicago and Penn for grad school

One theory I like is that the imperial military’s control and legitimacy is very tentative, because they’ve previously fought wars with Jedi and clones, so they’ve had to ramp up personnel in a hurry. They’re basically the guys volunteering for Homeland Security right now. Vader carries more weight

The whole thing seems to hinge on the idea that the rebels have the ability to detect a hyperspace jump within close proximity, and this somehow gives them more time to react while, I don’t know, the imperial destroyers have the light speed bends or something

If you need a good backhanded compliment, say “we were supposed to see you in the NFC championship game! What happened?”

The advantage of turkey, potatoes, stuffing, cornbread, etc, is that you can use it to feed a LOT of people, of all ages. If your dinner is smaller, and more age-homogeneous, almost any other kind of food works just as well or better. (Some kind of potatoes are virtually always a hit though.)

This is true of a lot of things for me but what reminded me of it was the renewal of discourse about whether you should cook turkey on Thanksgiving.
I like trad Thanksgiving food for *me* (and luckily my family does too), but I am fascinated by folks inventing or blending different traditions

I’ve discovered or at least clarified a different use of “Go Birds”:
There’s “Go Birds” as “inshallah,” eg “I hope I ace this exam, Go Birds”
But ALSO “god forbid,” eg “what if we get stuck here another day, Go Birds”
AND “god forgive me,” eg “I could see us living in NYC again, Go Birds”

I don’t think you can judge a city’s water by a sip test. You really have to go there to know there, ie live with it for at least a few weeks

Nuzzi's fawning coverage of the sociopathic conspiracy crank she was having an affair with aided his rise to political power, which he is using to perpetrate the worst intentional public health catastrophe of our unnecessarily shortened lifetimes, and THAT is the STORY.
