Labour says Farage’s plan to repeal Online Safety Act shows he is siding with ‘extreme pornographers’ over children – UK politics live Technology secretary Peter Kyle says Reform UK leader’s latest comments demonstrate he is ‘not on the side of children’ Good morning. Yesterday Reform UK said that it would repeal the Online Safety Act, key parts of which have only just come into force. The party described it as “the greatest assault on freedom of speech in our lifetimes” and claimed that it won’t protect children because some people are using VPN services to bypass age cerification requirements. It was quite a bold policy announcement, because polls suggest voters strongly back measures to limit the spread of harmful content online, but it has gone down well with hardcore libertarians. Peter Kyle, the science secretary, has been giving interviews this morning, and he has not held back. In an interview with Sky News, he claimed this meant that Nigel Farage was now in effect siding with pornographers and paedophiles like Jimmy Savile. He explained: When it comes to online activity, we have seen unfettered access of adults to children via social media. When we put in the age verification, it stops strange adults getting in touch with children
Nigel Farage is on the side of turning the clock back to the time when strange adults, strangers, can get in touch via messenging apps with children. We have now asked [social media companies] to age verify the age at which people can have access to online content so we can protect children from unwanted, dangerous content, and also those messaging services. “The Blue Origin flight does not make me feel like humanity will reach new heights of achievement. It makes me feel like everything that is coming is grimly predictable” Couldn’t agree more!

The Blue Origin flight showcased the utter defeat of American feminism

The British media is doing its best to talk down the economy and the chancellor. Funny how so many of them missed this:

I’ve had #BBCRadio3 on all day as background to my working. But on “Composer of the week” they’re profiling Gustav #Mahler. Right now, 6th movement of his 3rd Symphony has brought me to a shuddering stop.
Absolutely sublime

Just caught a bit of Orangina’s cabinet meeting on BBC News. Omg. The blatant lying and misinformation coming out of these people. And Muskrat holding court S well.
Makes me want to weep. How low the US has sunk and how fast. Tragic.

This is the kind of stuff socials should be about (well, maybe dog/cat reels as well).
All in all much less stressful and depressing I reckon! 😊

Love this from Jason Sudeikis:
“As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap’, in season 4, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to ‘leap before they look,’ discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.”

Norwegian fuel supplier refuses U.S. warships over Ukraine Haltbakk Bunkers will cease supplying fuel to U.S. forces in Norway and American ships docking in Norwegian ports, citing dissatisfaction with recent U.S. policy towards Ukraine.

Interesting development!

Somehow, we need to quickly ween ourselves off US tech platforms. No small feat, but it needs to be done urgently.

The confirmation of Kash Patel as FBI director sends a clear and simple message to MAGA opponents:

Don't stand near any open windows. In fact, probably best to avoid upper storeys altogether.

Based on this, just deleted my Airbnb account. It was quite good whilst it lasted, but not that good and I don’t want to support businesses (if I can help it) which are owned by US oligarchs (which is getting increasingly hard to do!)

I’m a fan of Adrian Tchaikovsky having read both Children of Time and Children of Ruin (I note there is a third ‘Children of’ which I’ll need to look out for!).
Clever, innovative SF!

How the world’s richest man laid waste to the US government Elon Musk has achieved astonishing power in Trump’s administration – and spent the weekend wielding it

The US as we know it is doomed. Even if this article is only 50% correct (and suspect it’s right on), this is terrible for everyone!
