Shelters that house unaccompanied minors are bracing for "Freaky Friday," the start of an ICE operation that will first issue letters to children, seeking to pressure them to return to the countries they've fled in exchange for a cash payment. If they decline, their parents will be targeted by ICE.

I should say a "gas canister." One witness told me they experienced extreme irritation to their eyes and difficulty breathing, so it sounds like tear gas. That's a busy street in the middle of the day, lots of people milling about outside.

Until June 24, the rule for holding immigrants at Broadview was 12 hours. Then the Trump Admin quietly changed the rule, increasing the max to 72 hours. And still they're holding people beyond that time as well.

Also this with help from @amyqin.bsky.social: Between June 24 and July 28, ICE authorities at Broadview held 21 people longer than three days, with a few longer than five days.

Stuff we learned: In a June 24 memo, ICE quietly expanded the maximum number of hours to 72, or three days, that an immigrant could be held in a processing center like Broadview. That came as Trump appointees tripled ICE immigration arrest quotas to 3,000 per day, and detention centers filled up.

Broadview was never designed to be a detention facility, but the administration of President Donald Trump is now using it as a de facto one.
