a lil intro: I’m theater maker and teaching artist deep in that ✨adjunct hustle✨ here to talk about parenting, creating, pedagogy, and all the ways those spheres overlap, complicate, and enrich each other. Also: romance novel aficionado, multiracial girlie, exvangelical, SoCal -> NYC

YES!! My first experience actually understanding Shakespeare was with an incredible HS English teacher who had us read everything out loud together ❤️

So many freaking toys…..

In conclusion, trust your instinct to shake up that syllabus. Resist the lies and false promises of urgency and haste. Center softness and cultivate ensemble. Bring in the plays you love. Our students, the next generation of theater makers, deserve these gifts.

It means we are moving more “slowly” through each play but the feedback from students, especially those who learned English as a second or third language, has been really exciting. And they are PSYCHED for Melancholy Play - holding poetry and queerness and sadness and joy all together.

Reading Sarah Ruhl’s “Melancholy Play” with my undergrads in class today. I made time in the syllabus to read the plays we are working on scenes from out loud as a full group and it’s been transformational. Important reminder of SPEAKING and HEARING plays together and not just reading alone.
