I do wonder if young people who have grown up listening to nothing but gridified music have a more metronomic sense of rhythm, or if they're more likely to have 12TET perfect pitch. I suppose I could see if someone has done a study, but I prefer to stare out the window and wonder

In double-checking Johnston's thoughts about 12TET, I ran across a favorite quotation from John Cage: "Here we are almost halfway towards self-employment, and all we do is complain about the fact that we have this big unemployment problem. It's stupid. It's as stupid as believing in God."

(I think that the biggest problem is that being an asshole who wants to impose your will upon others has always been the main prerequisite for being put into the position of being able to impose your will on others, but I'm probably wrong. Maybe unnatural music creates such people)

I think these ideas are interesting, great pensive musing material, but both arguments seem to imply some bygone pre-grid time when people got along with each other, and I feel like there's nothing in the human history of endless wars to indicate such a time ever existed

This reminds me of Ben Johnston's contention that 12-tone equal temperament is making us sick (physically, socially, politically). Forcing the harmonic series onto a grid means all of our music is suffused with unnatural dissonance

I just heard the tale of how a heckler was thrown out of a Jandek show for repeatedly requesting “Freebird,” and I believe you should hear it too.

Freebird aside, St. Louis Friday might be my favorite Corwood DVD. The music is quite varied thanks to the band members swapping instruments throughout the show, and the whole thing was shot using what seems to be a repurposed security camera system

The drama happens later, before the fourth song, the first song with the full band. The person calls out "Freebird" again, and a couple of people tell him to shut up. You can just barely hear some ongoing muttering during the first few minutes of the song. I think that's when guy was asked to leave

I've done a silly amount of research on this. The offending request can't be heard on the CD--the dead air between songs has been edited out. On the DVD, you can hear someone call out "Freebird" right at the start, while the Rep is setting up. You hear a few forced chuckles and some boos in response
