A white background with two large, irregular black shapes on the right side, resembling ink blots. Five small blue circles are scattered around and between the black shapes. In the upper right corner is a square containing a question mark. On the left side, a yellow speech bubble reads: “What could the total be? What are some possibilities? How are the possibilities connected?” The image is from www.stevewyborney.com.

A teacher friend asked a great question today. I have some ideas, but I'm curious what others think: What's the intended mathematical goal or learning behind these unknown total Splats? @stevewyborney.bsky.social

On Minneapolis in January 2026 I have loved this city for a long time, but never as much as I have loved it this last week. This is a long post. I promise that it ends with some hope for all of us. Over the last month, but espec…

I wrote up a bit about Minneapolis right now, mostly to share with my coworkers and family, but if it works for you, you can share it, too. arbitrarilyclosecom.wordpress.com/2026/01/11/o...

I am consistently finding that PDFs of MTLT articles are not passing accessiblity checks in Canvas. Is this something that @nctm.org plans to address in the future? Math teacher educators...how do you remediate this in the meantime?

I’ve been using it as a “thinking partner” to help me revise lessons that were a flop last semester. I teach preservice teachers, and I also redesigned a project with a choice to generate a lesson using AI and then discuss how they would improve it. The results were decent.

Front of a handwritten notecard with the following notes: Look for evidence, ask questions. Amygdala doesn't control frontal lobe. Tell it that's a lie. Write down illogical thoughts. Pinpoint what source of nervous energy is. Let thoughts go. Acknowledge it, but don't fixate on it. [illegible] can bring behaviors.

I found this notecard in the library stacks yesterday, and I just keep wondering about it. Are they notes from a book? A class? A personal pep-talk?

“Let thoughts go.”

Racks of CDs with a pop/rock label above them

This happened to me recently, and here’s where I thought we were headed…no questions asked. We made it all the way there before I realized she meant the music store with instruments, not CDs. My elder millennial is showing.

Illustration of two joyful-looking people waving a trans flag with the title “Transgender Day of Visibility, March 31, 2025”

Today is Trans Day of Visibility.

I'm so proud of my trans kid—for his courage to be exactly who he is every day.

People are trying to erase trans lives, but trans people aren't going anywhere. They are loved, they are thriving, and they deserve to be seen.

Trans joy is real, and it's beautiful.
