If hyper-local democracy is the answer, who is the elected official I need to petition to fire or reform our terrible, monopolistic waste management company?

The flip side of "I alone can fix it" is "you don't have to do anything." Democracy demands more of its adherents than authoritarianism. The appeal of a strong man is understandable when a populace is exhausted from the daily struggle of life and has nothing left for the obligations of citizenship.
