My guess from the script is that he is learning via imitation. So he’ll start off mute and slowly learn words, start off not knowing what basic things are if they never specifically appeared in his story? I think that would be fun.

Damon leans over Anawin against a wall. He holds Anawin's hand in his own, lifting it to his lips so he can lick a wound over Anawin's knuckles. Anawin's expression is a confusing mixture of bewilderment and horror, but he's blushing. A cat peeks over Anawin's head, observing Damon's actions with equal bewilderment. A little thought bubble from the cat shows a crudely-drawn cat and many question marks. Behind all of this, a glowing portal opens, illuminating the scene in shades of green and blue. Behind the portal's distorted texture, the faded words of the teased Happy Ending script can be seen.

This series is going to be my next brain worm, I can already tell.
