We can keep the national flock but have more areas like this sheep free. I hope your sheep can do the job you need them to do. Introducing goats would beโฆ
07.03.2026 09:06 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0It is a fair point. I was part of this project and planted many of these trees. After the land was purchased before anything was done the sheep and the goats were removed and a stock fence put up. Without removing the grazers everything else would have been futile.

04.03.2026 13:32 โ ๐ 13 ๐ 7 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0What I would say is that this is a small pinprick of land on a vast landscape of sheep. I think we can keep national flock numbers whilst still increasing projects like this. Also there was a plan to add cattle back in when the trees were established. In @eastlothiancouncil.bsky.social do we even know how many deer are present and is there any policy on them and also protecting the tiny remnants of ancient woodland we still hang on to here?

06.02.2026 18:25 โ ๐ 20 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1A sunlit landscape with two slender, yellow-leaved aspen trees and mist rising from the ground. Large yellow text at the top reads "ASPEN," and smaller white text below says "THE TREE THAT CLONES ITSELF," with arrows pointing to smaller aspen saplings growing close to the bigger trees.
Aspen can produce millions of seeds โ but in Scotland, flowering is rare and seed production even rarer. So it clones itself instead, sending up suckers from its roots. That helps it persist, but not spread. With more planting, aspen could flourish in Scotland.
