Red Squirrel wiped out in East Lothian Scotland. Loss of woodland and non-native grey squirrels the major drivers.
Join me for a chat with Tom Bowser from @argatyredkites.bsky.social about his latest book, "Waters of Life". We talk about being the first private landowner in Britain to relocate beavers onto his farm, navigating the bureaucracy and opposition from farming neighbours. ๐๐ฆค๐ฆ

Ecological-integrityโled theory of change for rewilding that begins from ecological limits rather than social tolerance.

Cat makes a very fair point however sheep removal (if present) is the first step for pretty much every rewilding effort.
I just had to disappear into the woods. It heals my heart.
Yes if you scroll down to the map you can see a SBP rewilding partner on Shetland. www.scotlandbigpicture.com/northwoods
very detrimental to the broader biodiversity of your site.
Still involved planting in neighbouring valleys now. My feeling around sheep is that we need to rethink how much of our land is open to them. We can keep the national flock but have more areas like this sheep free. I hope your sheep can do the job you need them to do. Introducing goats would beโฆ
It is a fair point. I was part of this project and planted many of these trees. After the land was purchased before anything was done the sheep and the goats were removed and a stock fence put up. Without removing the grazers everything else would have been futile.
On the other 99.9% of rural land.

What I would say is that this is a small pinprick of land on a vast landscape of sheep. I think we can keep national flock numbers whilst still increasing projects like this. Also there was a plan to add cattle back in when the trees were established. Rewilding, community and food production.

Landscape ecological restoration. It can be done but we need to get a move on. This is Carrifran where the sheep were removed to allow this native woodland to take over.
Great work canโt wait to see it.

Re-peopling the glens with woodland crofts rather than subsidy fuelled hill sheep or ecocidal grouse shooting.

In @eastlothiancouncil.bsky.social do we even know how many deer are present and is there any policy on them and also protecting the tiny remnants of ancient woodland we still hang on to here?
but with numbers so artificially high they are also inhibiting woodland regenerationโฆ
Roe are a beautiful and essential part of this woodland ecosystem recycling nutrients, fertilising the soil and spreading seedsโฆ
Did you know the original Bambi was a roe deer before Disney ok. The buck in this clip will be starting to get territorial in the months running up to the rut. The female may well be pregnant but the fertilised egg has been held back from being implanted until after winter to ensure a summer birthโฆ
