It's great fun getting the terrain out to put together some vignettes 😃

Today has turned into a terrain bonanza. First my Last Valley order arrived (orchards and rivers mainly) which will go along way in sprucing up my collection. Then my long awaited Medieval ruins 4x4 mat arrived from Element Games. Fantastic stuff all round.

One mini can inspire a whole project. I got this frog from @fenrisgames.com on a whim. Then I thought it'd be funny if I painted it to look like they were holding up a menu, and my theme for the Beastman baggage train for my Old World army was born. Welcome to "Chez Minotaure", pop-up food vendor.

How cool is this! My friend lent me the Jewish rebels he's been painting up from my range on Northwing Minis. I am loving what he's done with these, and I'm going to be doing some photoshoots with them over the next week or so.

I personally find that over detailed minis result in everyone looking like the main character. But depends on what you want to use the minis for. I envision mine being used in skirmish games, so each one is designed to be a bit of a character in their own right.

I completely agree. I nearly always find hand sculpted easier to paint, and I can normally tell purely based on the ease of painting whether a mini was CAD designed or hand sculpted.

There's definitely a place for 3d printing, it can be really useful. But given the choice I'll always choose metal for miniatures.

However, 3d printed terrain is fantastically useful.

It's such a shame about the situation at the moment. I'm keeping a close eye on it though, and as soon as things stabilise I'll definitely reopen shipping!

Most importantly, in my opinion, the hand sculpted nature of metals gives them unsurpassed character. I've seen lovely 3d prints, but the fact that hand sculpting is such a human interaction gives metals a wonderful presence and life, which makes them all the more enjoyable to paint and play with.

"Why not sell 3d prints?" "Metal models are old fashioned", etc. These are all things people have said to me.

When I set up Northwing Miniatures I wanted to sell metal models because I love the feeling, the heft, and the style. Sure, 3d printing has some advantages, but metals are what I love.

Few things make me happier than seeing my miniatures out in the wild being painted and enjoyed. One of my friends sent me this shot of Simeon Bar Giora and friends that they're working on at the moment and I think they look awesome.

After a nice walk this morning I finished my pit fighting ring for our Mordheim campaign day.

When designing my new pack of Jewish rebel slingers, I asked Alan to make it so that two of them can hold shields if you want them to. This gives the pack a lot more versatility as I also sell four shield variants they could use. www.northwingminiatures.com/product-page...

Now, you might be wondering why these "greens" (minis that have been sculpted in green stuff that are sent for casting) are actually brown. That's because they were scorched during the casting process, resulting in the green turning brown.

Today I finished off my Beastman sorcerer on chariot with the addition of Gamers Grass tufts and large leaves.

The urge to rewatch the chariot scene in Ben Hur is strong now.

Also, as an aside, I'd love to write a chariot mod for Gaslands. I think that could be hilarious, if done well.

I went to Belgium on a school trip once. Tried to speak a terrible combo of German and Dutch.

They responded in perfect English. Quite humiliating but I don't blame them!

I had a lovely morning finishing off my new rebel minis. As the sun was shining I took the opportunity to get some nice photos with them using the Deserts and Warmer Climes backdrop from @handiworkgames.bsky.social which really helps makes them pop. Now they're ready to fight the legions of Rome.

I'm calling these bad piggies done. Absolutely grotesque, but in a good way. The one on the right is the GW metal version of the Razorgor, while the left one is a 3d print (Highland Miniatures perhaps?)

I mean, it is a style. Just maybe the style of someone with an inability to draw 😂

I don't want to use AI, and I'd always rather pay an actual human if I need something done that I can't do myself. And if I can't afford to pay someone, then it doesn't get done as I'm not using AI.

My drawing skills are pants. I managed to mock this up (after an hour of frustration and rubbing out) to use in advertising my upcoming"Rat-Kin Reavers" minis, but it still looks a bit rubbish. So the next step is to give this to my artist-friend and ask them to draw something based on this.
