I am going on holiday tomorrow for a few days, so if you put any orders in (which, as always, are hugely appreciated!) then there will be a small delay to posting them out to you.

With my Beastman army done and my rats still being sculpted, I have returned to my 3rd edition Imperial Guard project. On the desk are a platoon of conscripts, because quantity has a quality of its own!

Rat butt anyone?

Alan has just sent me some photos of the minis he's sculpting for me. Something quite different from what we've done before - this is going to be very exciting πŸ˜ƒ

My Beastman army in all its glory. I'm calling this done for the time being. For the first time in a long time I set out with a definite plan in mind, did it, and managed to avoid expanding it exponentially (at least for now!)

Metal commissar miniature painted Post image

What a difference a day makes. This afternoon I painted, varnished and based my commissar for my 3rd edition 40k project, the 122nd Cadian from the original Cityfight book. I am really impressed with the sculpt, it's lovely and crisp, making it great fun to paint up.

Haha, no worries, the photo doesn't make that clear. I've painted another one without a shield where you can see the sword and dagger more clearly on the belt. I asked Alan, my sculptor, to make them so they could hold shields if desired so people have the flexibility to choose.

Well, these have swords as well, so I'm imagining them loosing a few volleys of shot then following up with swords to finish the job.

Tonight I finished painting up some more of my Jewish rebels, ready to go and fight some Romans. What did they do for us after all?

Simon Bar Koseba leading some of his followers through an orchard, on the hunt for Romans to ambush...

It's great fun getting the terrain out to put together some vignettes πŸ˜ƒ

Today has turned into a terrain bonanza. First my Last Valley order arrived (orchards and rivers mainly) which will go along way in sprucing up my collection. Then my long awaited Medieval ruins 4x4 mat arrived from Element Games. Fantastic stuff all round.

One mini can inspire a whole project. I got this frog from @fenrisgames.com on a whim. Then I thought it'd be funny if I painted it to look like they were holding up a menu, and my theme for the Beastman baggage train for my Old World army was born. Welcome to "Chez Minotaure", pop-up food vendor.

How cool is this! My friend lent me the Jewish rebels he's been painting up from my range on Northwing Minis. I am loving what he's done with these, and I'm going to be doing some photoshoots with them over the next week or so.

I personally find that over detailed minis result in everyone looking like the main character. But depends on what you want to use the minis for. I envision mine being used in skirmish games, so each one is designed to be a bit of a character in their own right.

I completely agree. I nearly always find hand sculpted easier to paint, and I can normally tell purely based on the ease of painting whether a mini was CAD designed or hand sculpted.

There's definitely a place for 3d printing, it can be really useful. But given the choice I'll always choose metal for miniatures.

However, 3d printed terrain is fantastically useful.

Thank you, appreciate the kind words.

It's such a shame about the situation at the moment. I'm keeping a close eye on it though, and as soon as things stabilise I'll definitely reopen shipping!

Most importantly, in my opinion, the hand sculpted nature of metals gives them unsurpassed character. I've seen lovely 3d prints, but the fact that hand sculpting is such a human interaction gives metals a wonderful presence and life, which makes them all the more enjoyable to paint and play with.

"Why not sell 3d prints?" "Metal models are old fashioned", etc. These are all things people have said to me.

When I set up Northwing Miniatures I wanted to sell metal models because I love the feeling, the heft, and the style. Sure, 3d printing has some advantages, but metals are what I love.

I have two bundle deals on my website, one with 10% off and with 20% off. Plus they have funny names because I can't help myself. This is what you get in the People's Front of Judaea deal.

I need to do a much nicer version of this video, but you get the idea.

Few things make me happier than seeing my miniatures out in the wild being painted and enjoyed. One of my friends sent me this shot of Simeon Bar Giora and friends that they're working on at the moment and I think they look awesome.
