Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Newcastle University. Interested in understanding the intersection of medicine and criminal justice, but also likely to be talking about Japanese Roleplaying Games (JRPGs), running and Star Wars.

07.08.2025 16:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I prosecute and defend the most serious sexual offences in our courts.
The overwhelming majority of offenders are British-born. Overwhelmingly the victim is someone known to them, either a partner or relative.
Anybody purporting to care about protecting women might start there.
I need help from the Bluesky collective. I'm looking for recent (2020+) research on whether Brits are willing to travel abroad to get medical care and also if they are willing to go into debt to pay for it. I can only find research from 2014 and back. #MedSky #Health #Healthcare #MedicalTourism
02.08.2025 17:17 β π 1 π 5 π¬ 0 π 0Homicides generally oscillating between 500-700 for last 20 years. Sexual crimes on the rise (with good evidence of the underreporting of this kind of crime). I'm not saying it is rational to have a fear of crime, but that media reporting and political gamesmanship plays into people's fears.
02.08.2025 19:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The trend has been crime in general has reduced but the rate of serious crimes (homicides and sexual violence) remain steady or have even risen. As these are crimes more likely to receive media attention, public believe crime rates are higher. Add in crime rates as political football and voila.

When I was interviewed by BBC about our project they asked me why we should be interested in police custody healthcare, as it only impacts "bad people". As I said then, any of us could end up in custody (and of course, "bad people" generally also refers to most vulnerable, so there's that as well).

25.07.2025 12:34 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Adding this to the Christmas list. Looks a fascinating text on marginalised and/or controversual knowledge claims. Less studiously, as someone who likes watching Ancient Aliens to see how the "experts" patchwork various kinds of evidence together, this looks right up my street. Fascinating stuff!
25.07.2025 07:50 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This made me laugh. Currently playing Clair Obscura: Expedition 33 and if I make a dodge (certainly not risking parries) it is far more luck than judgement. π
24.07.2025 09:04 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The thing I'm proudest of delivering as Degree Programme Director was a robust Support to Study process in our department. It took a lots of time and was pretty much all I did in my final year, but had large impacts on the students with additional mental health needs. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
24.07.2025 06:09 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Involving families in their loved onesβ care helps to keep people safe and healthy in prison. Our new paper with @centreformh.bsky.social calls on the criminal justice system to do more to involve families in prison healthcare.

17.07.2025 13:21 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0And when there is so much market uncertainty (it rises and falls based on Trump's Truth Social posts), promoting stocks and shares investments just seems unconscionable to me.

16.07.2025 06:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I worked in a call-centre in 2023 and we daily received calls from homeowners sold stock market mortgages 20+ years earlier by unregulated Financial Advisors promising their mortgage and a bit extra at end of term. They were worried as the fund hadn't met the mortgage. Deregulation is dangerous.
16.07.2025 06:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0This is what frustrates me about the current Labour Party. They are doing some good things but we very rately hear about them. Instead they prefer to broadcast Thatcherite policies like this.
