Homicides generally oscillating between 500-700 for last 20 years. Sexual crimes on the rise (with good evidence of the underreporting of this kind of crime). I'm not saying it is rational to have a fear of crime, but that media reporting and political gamesmanship plays into people's fears.

The trend has been crime in general has reduced but the rate of serious crimes (homicides and sexual violence) remain steady or have even risen. As these are crimes more likely to receive media attention, public believe crime rates are higher. Add in crime rates as political football and voila.

Interesting, someone for me to speak to when I hold a Visiting Fellowship in that department later in the year.

When I was interviewed by BBC about our project they asked me why we should be interested in police custody healthcare, as it only impacts "bad people". As I said then, any of us could end up in custody (and of course, "bad people" generally also refers to most vulnerable, so there's that as well).

Should student mental health responsibility fall to universities? The number of students reporting mental health concerns is rising. But to what extent should the onus be on universities?

The thing I'm proudest of delivering as Degree Programme Director was a robust Support to Study process in our department. It took a lots of time and was pretty much all I did in my final year, but had large impacts on the students with additional mental health needs. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I worked in a call-centre in 2023 and we daily received calls from homeowners sold stock market mortgages 20+ years earlier by unregulated Financial Advisors promising their mortgage and a bit extra at end of term. They were worried as the fund hadn't met the mortgage. Deregulation is dangerous.

Remember learning about the Scopes trial as an undergrad on a module about science and expertise. Was case studies like this (and Inherit the Wind) that have ended up with me researching the intersection between science, medicine and law.
