We created an ‘unsexy’ moth that could be the key to greener pest control Scientists have learned how to turn off moths’ sex signals – this could help farmers fight pests without pesticides.

A single “sexy” gene can help combat one of the most destructive fruit pests. By deleting the gene that lets female moths produce their mating scent, researchers created an “unsexy” moth and showed a way to turn insect attraction into a powerful pest control tool.

During the visit, Jakub studied 𝘌𝘶𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢, 𝘙𝘩𝘺𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘬𝘢𝘯𝘢 & 𝘚𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘢 spp. and collected tissue samples from 28 individuals for genomic analyses.

He gained hands-on experience handling historical specimens at the Museum of @biologylu.bsky.social .

The goal was to integrate museum collections with phylogenomics to study West Palearctic tiger moths.

This week we celebrated reaching 1000 lepidopteran genomes in the Tree of Life (ToL) programme @ the @sangerinstitute.bsky.social with butterfly crafts and cake! To celebrate the genomes for 1,000 (!) species of Lepidoptera in Europe, Project Psyche has released a preprint outlining our ambitions to jointly sequence & leverage genomes of all 11,000 species in Europe to propel science, conservation & society.

This was a joy to write together as a community!
