Huge congratulations to Dr. Conklin and her team! Their work looks beyond the traditional framework of diet, exercise, and medication, instead exploring how the gains, loss, and absence of social relationships impacts #diabetes risk and disease progression.

#Pharmacies are increasingly becoming an a vital way that Canadians receive essential clinical services, like medication renewal, vaccination, and assessment of minor ailments. π
But more rural communities have much less access to pharmaciesβ making it harder for residents to use these services.
#VirtualCare can make health care much more accessible, especially for people living in rural areas. However, there are risks when it's over-relied upon.
For example, patients living with #KidneyDisease in Northern BC were less supported in learning to use their medical tech through remote care.
π« While 79% of surveyed Canadian #UniversityStudents had a perceived need for #MentalHealth treatment, only 40% tried to access those services.
These disparities were related to age, international background, and financial stress.

How do videos on #TikTok portray homelessness?
Dr. Skye Barbic and team analyzed the top videos to find out. They found that while mostly positive, depictions of #homelessness often lacked nuance and raised ethical concerns around consent.
Eight researchers' headshots with their names. From left to right: Dr Skye Barbic, Dr. Naveed Janjua, Dr. Angela Rusollilo, Dr. Frank Schuermeyer, Dr. Jason Sutherland, Dr. John Saples, Dr. Brian Grunau, Dr. Andrew Kestler.. The title reads "Investigating Substance Abuse and Overdose Prevention."
What are Advancing Health scientists working on? Let's find out!
One main theme from our projects funded by the CIHR Fall Project Competition is #SubstanceYse and #overdose prevention. Our researchers are looking to reduce overdose risk among youth, address gaps in toxicology profiles, and more.
Over 8 million Canadians live with #ChronicPain. What makes their treatment decisions more challenging? π€
A survey by Dr. Linda Li's team found the biggest issues were difficulty understanding health care info, lack of prior knowledge, and lack of physician support for their preferred treatment.
Large language models (LLMs) are used to predict patterns in large groups of text. Dr. Kathryn Isaac and team analysed 1888 #BreastCancer pathology reports with an LLM, finding it was extremely accurate in predicting the chance of relapse.
