07.05.2025 05:55 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Yeah, I mean if you take a bucket of water and spin it really faster then water stays safely nestled at the bottom. In microgravity i.e. space you can get a pretty perfect 1g of acceleration on your bodies natural 'down' with the right sized ring and the right speed. They're great
01.04.2025 19:50 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Not even 20 - we could do it now if the budget and need was there. Gravity rings have been a thing since forever and do a pretty good job at giving you solid ground in space. I think there might even be one or two groups building one even so watch that space (pun intended)
31.03.2025 22:49 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Maybe for full terraforming but we don't even have that tech yet beyond the meme that is nuking the surface, heating the poles, and praying. I'm more talking a 100 year settlement plan not a multi-generational one. that is a discussion that I couldn't begin to have - I'm just a science nerd :p
31.03.2025 22:43 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Not on the moon but in space - where the microgravity and total vacuum allow for huge scale manufacturing with relative ease. Could even leverage cold-welding. No sense expending fuel landing/taking off from the surface of the moon for manufacturing when you could do the same thing in orbit i'd say
31.03.2025 22:38 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Augmentation is far from a solution just because of how crazy complicated bodies are and how many risks are involved. we're not in cyberpunk :p no need to put people at that level of risk yet. Even things as simple as bleeding can be hell to deal with in very low grav and that's not easy to solve
31.03.2025 22:34 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0Just 'replicating gravity' is fine on smaller scales and shorter terms but if we're talking permanent habitation it's not really practical to have everyone living in massive gravity rings with thousands of points of failure or something to that extent (':
31.03.2025 22:27 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Help. How do I get bluesky discover to stop showing me BTS fan posts. I know nothing of them. Never listened to their music in my life and have no desire for that brand of celebrity drama. I just want to see cute cats and science stuff 😭
31.03.2025 04:26 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0(the last part was more because of the other reply, otherwise I'm personally quite hopeful for colonisation of mars mostly for the epic scientific value but also because it's always good to have a planetary plan b in case some rogue asteroid becomes a meteor and splats us or something)
31.03.2025 04:23 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Also things like the atmosphere (even if it's a crap one) play a big part!
Getting humans there though is going to take the combined efforts of tons of orgs, companies, even countries to pull off. The muskrat is kidding himself on SpaceX being the 'first' and always has been lmao
On the one hand, a lunar transfer station would totally help spaceflight as a whole but on the other, the moon has about 1/2 the gravity of Mars which is already very low. It's crazy how important gravity is to normal human function so that plays a big part on where to settle even short term
