Looking towards spring in Appalachia. A patch of Shortia in bloom at the Arboretum is the biggest I’ve ever seen.

Apparently the area where they live suffers regular droughts so sometimes it’s great to have a small bill for cracking small seeds and sometimes it’s better to have a large bill for tackling large seeds It’s supposed to be a fairly unusual situation in birds. No real intermediates between the two

I was a keeper at Riverbanks Zoo when we helped with a study on these guys and their bill dimorphism.
