I lose track of who I've told this, but one appeared on the family dinghy in Cornwall when I was 8 or so and I was convinced it was a madagascan Giraffe Weevil brought in on a cargo ship! One of my favourite insects as a kid. I suppose the Giraffe Weevil is just one of these with extensions.

Sepedon sphegea live around still water bodies, where they breed on aquatic 🐌 🐌. The adults usually feed on dead insects and perch on reeds, irises, sedges etc having you swearing at the autofocus. This one went straight for my pasty crumb then climbed up my trouser leg like some street kitten!

Amblyjoppa fuscipennis

An extraordinary ichnuemon wasp from the Norfolk #Brecks the other day - Amblyjoppa fuscipennis aka the Small Elephant-botherer. Presumably the English name is a reference to parasitising Small Elephant Hawkmoths, rather than actual Elephants! #TeamEnto

Etymology of the day: spiders were once known as β€˜attercops’, or β€˜poison-heads’, because it was believed most spiders were venomous. The β€˜cop’ element became the β€˜cob’ in β€˜cobweb’.

Yes 'heron hawking' was a sport. There are several historic illustrations of it, including this painting by Edward Landseer at Kenwood House. Apparently sometimes a heron managed to injure the hawk with its beak.

Yep that's what I do. Whenever I lead a pollinator workshop I try to start with catching a honeybee as a frame of reference (or a honeybee slide in a presentation) and explain that they're not the bees which need saving.

18.04.2025 07:15 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yet I tend to find that most people don't know what a honeybee looks like if presented with one! They think it's a wasp, since so much bee imagery focuses on cuter, fuzzier bumblebees.

Interesting. Across the pond, most of our bee iconography is bumblebebees, including on things that actually *should* depict honeybees. Never a solitary bee to be seen though..
