The hysteria over emotos, which many people confuse with ebikes, is insane. Yes, there needs to be some legal guidance. I think that's coming in IL for 2026. But ebikes are not killing people. You know what is killing people? Motor vehicles.

I saw a person riding a divvy bike on the sidewalk and a person on a Lime scooter riding in traffic on 35th today because the protected bike lanes are not clear. Love me some protected bike lanes but we need more bike lane plows.

Just what is the point of these? They will will take up precious travel space, sidewalks, bike lanes, etc., that belong to people. They will also take away delivery jobs from people. They are likely to cause more problems then they solve.

Protected bike lanes are shit if not cleared after snow. Five days after our most recent Chicago snowstorm, I couldn't even ride in the Kinzie bike lane. In some cases, snow has been pushed *into* the bike lanes. Meanwhile, #PlowTheSidewalks was killed by @mayorofchicago.bsky.social.

The most treacherous places to ride right now are the protected bike lanes. Until they are cleared they are more hinderance than help to people on bikes.

Five days or so after the snow fall and the protected bike lanes on Milwaukee and on Kinzie are not yet cleared. They were very icy and treacherous this am. It feels like the city of Chicago’s message to cyclists this week has been, “Screw you!”

Very sad.

If I can learn to ride in winter, most anyone can. With the right bike for you, some key accessories, and proper layering, the biggest concern, which are cold temps, can be nullified...mostly. 😉

Drivers, esp drivers of large trucks, put pedestrians & people on bicycles in harm's way when they block bike lanes and crosswalks. The City needs to develop a real plan for when & where commercial trucks may conduct deliveries. At minimum though citizens should be able to easily report violations.

Essentially, yes. It is either CDOT or Streets and San that is responsible as I understand it.

All the bike and pedestrian infrastructure in the world will not do people any good unless a city has an efficient and accountable maintenance plan.

Would the author say the same about building bike lanes? Installing automatic traffic cameras? Requiring Intelligent Speed Assist?

All of those are proven to save lives — and at a fraction of AVs' cost.

This morning’s bike commute felt sketchier than yesterday’s. The bike lanes are a mess, very icy. Avoid. On a plus note, I saw many more people on bikes and e-scooters than I have on past similar days. People clearly rely on micro mobility now, even in the winter.

Sounds about right based on past winters. It's too slow.

My sidewalk-clearing hot take is that I would rather walk on a completely uncleared sidewalk than a badly-cleared one. An uncleared sidewalk offers more traction.

I expect the City to clear those lanes. They have the equipment and have done so in the past. The question is, how long will it take?

Treacherous biking out there this morning. Side streets in Logan are very icy. Main streets are clear. Protected bike lanes on Milwaukee are impassable. Careful out there. Ride with the cars and make sure you can been seen!
