My mom's dad worked as a chef, first in his mom's hotel in Nebraska, then in The Penthouse (a restaurant in cherry creek attached to Neusteter's). He then was a chef (for the men who repaired railway tracks) for union pacific railroad.

My dad's dad escaped working in coal mines in Trinidad Colo by being the first to go to college in Denver. He helped put those giant assed computers in Denver's Federal building, and was an accountant there as well.

I sat in on her calculus class, and that day, they were doing compound interest. I struggled to follow along.
I no longer knew how to calculate compound interest.

One time, very long ago, I had a small child, and an ex husband who owed me years of back child support. I learned how to do compound interest before I learned how to do excel (which made it easier for sure). Some time later, I went to visit my sister who was still in college.
