05.03.2026 00:48 β π 230 π 42 π¬ 0 π 2What is a roleplaying game? Nobody really knows. Roleplaying Games, otherwise known as TTRPGs (see below), were first discovered in 1972 by Lieutenant Frances Games as part of an experimental military programme. We still don't know exactly what they are or how they work, but researchers at DMI have compiled the following informaiton. We hope you find this useful. T Time-intensive T Transphysical R Rote P Procedural G Activities FACTS: -TTRPGs involve a shared psychosocial experience of high-intensity events mediated through THE FIELD. -Operating a TTRPG requires a reference textbook that weighs over two kilograms, dozens of information-dense forms, and a selection of random number generators. -A team (known as a "cell") is required to correctly operate a TTRPG. Rumours of "solo" roleplaying have not been successfully replicated in laboratory tests. -Incorrect operation of a TTRPG can cause physical and mental distress. User caution is advised. MYTHS: -TTRPGs lead to satanic beliefs: FALSE. Laboratory test sessions did show the spread of a belief system referred to as "Red Nihilism," but this is not a cause for concern. -TTRPGs require a physical proxy for events depicted: FALSE. Lt. Games invented a proprietary form of cerebral processing that we now call imagination(TM) to parse the shared reality. -There's no wrong way to play a TTRPG so long as you have fun: FALSE. There's a reason that TTRPGs are operated with textbooks that run hundreds of pages long. Every minutiae of the rule system must be obeyed or catastrophe can occur (see [REDACTED] INCIDENT [RECACTED]).
This is tangential but the best "what is a roleplaying game" section ever is from Deathmatch Island:

Now playtesting: Rocket Club by @emhubbard.bsky.social!
In this game of teens fending off an alien invasion, each roll results in an outcome, mood, and side effect. It's great for one-shots or short campaigns and includes two sample scenarios. Worlds collide in Rocket Club!

[From Wikipedia] Catbus (Japanese: γγγγΉ, Hepburn: Nekobasu) is a fictional character in the Studio Ghibli film My Neighbor Totoro, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is a large, grinning, twelve-legged cat with a large bushy tail and a hollow body that serves as a bus, with windows and seats covered with fur. Here we see Catbus with a manic expression on their face as they zoom out of the sky and across the landscape leaving behind a Catbus-colored (tan and brown striped) streaking trail of jagged letters reading βMaybe it will happen todayβ.

Black and white digital illustration on a warm gray mottled background. Stout, indeterminately goth-y serif lettering filling out a shield-like shape with some decorative additions top and bottom. Like lettering youβd see on an overly ambitious gravestone or an overly sincere tattoo. Kind of runic. Kind of metal. And a little Victorian with flourishes and vines twisting through the spaces. It reads βMaybe it will happen todayβ.

Now I've got an index to review and 75 more pages of a 180-page draft to read before inputting edits. Should be able to do all that by Sunday.
A screenshot of an email from an ad agency to Evil Hat Marketing: Hey Evil Hat team, Promised this is the last time youβll hear from me. We are wrapping up generating content on the house. The AI studio is starting to get fully booked with our paying clients, and I have strict orders to stop promoting this come the weekend. I figured Evil Hat might as well get some work out of us at no cost while you can. Want in before we close it up? Best, [redacted] And then our reply: Hi [redacted], We will never use AI for our games or for our marketing. It's toxic to our customer audience and it's an ethical violation of the hard work put in by the human artists we hire to illustrate our books and the human writers who design our games. In short, it's not "free work" it's theft. Feel free to take me off your mailing list. Hope you turn around your business model because frankly, your current approach sucks shit. -Tom
