Rows of flat headstones are sinking into the grass. Some of them are almost completely covered. In the distance is a large white cross, about the size of a person and several trees. The grass is clearly mowed but no one is caring for the headstones.

After a lifetime of service to a church and a god, she is just left here, in a place where the women are laid under haphazard headstones. So carelessly placed, that even the markers from last year are over grown. She isn't even with family. She is alone, under a crooked stone.

A smiling older women, in her late 70s, with short grey hair that has been slicked back. She is wearing a white zip up fleece and large clear rim aviator glasses. Her hands are lightly liver spotted.

Annie loved puzzles and cards. A women denied children by faith she never held a baby she didn't fall in love with. She was a teacher in Mexico and is the reason my Appalachian family has pozole at every holiday.

A flat slightly over grown headstone sinks into the earth. Sister Anna Thieken O.P. 1931 - 2009. At the edge of the picture another headstone is sinking further into the dirt.

Today I learned no one visits nuns' graves. Not even me. I walked right here, like the funeral was yesterday. I dug out as much of the grass as I could. Every stone in this lot is sinking, forgotten and mowed over without a thought. Sister Annie was my grandmother's little sister.
