Fate of Cthulhu The Ascellan Conspiracy by Pascal Godbout Dawn of a NewDay (1939) New York World’s Fair – 1939. Seeking to prevent the world of tomorrow from becoming a reality, your crew travels to the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The Ascellan Vanguard is preparing humanity as vessels for their consciousness through an imprinting device they plan to spread across the world: the View-Master. Its inventor will be introducing it at the Fair, where a wide array of inventions are being showcased. The mission is far from simple. The team must arrive at the Grand Opening on April 30th, 1939, when the prototype will be on display. You must locate the right pavilion, and remove the View-Master before too many scientists, politicians, or the rich and famous are exposed to it. Doing so without drawing attention will be difficult, as your looks and demeanor will seem more and more out of place the further you travel back in time. The Ascellans have devised Impenetrable Alien Schemes. What other inventions are part of the conspiracy? What Ascellan agents walk the Fair grounds? What countries have already been infiltrated? Could this be how the Vanguard manages to spread world-wide? And have they detected your interference across time? Your mission: find the View-Master’s inventor, Edwin Mayer, destroy or disable his prototype, and root out the Ascellan(s) behind this new menace. But beware – the World’s Fair is crowded, and the Resistance is convinced other dangers lurk within the grounds.

I love GMing at various cons. Can't wait to see the vibe in Vancouver!

The OGL was new, and I just wanted to tinker with the whole Fudge concepts.

I then stumbled upon Fate 2.0 and I was intrigued. Life got busy and I only really came back to Fate in 2016, a few years after Fate Core was released.

Great dive into that era. I was messing around with Fudge in 2006 to make a mirror world rpg that stayed as half-formed ideas on my old PC.
I never even considered whether commercial licensing would be feasible back then.

Dancey’s impact was really interesting to me, because I am intimately familiar with how opening up an RPG was prior to the OGL. It was flawed, but it was light years ahead of other options (creative commons wasn’t yet suited, and most other open licenses were software specific).

- Tinkering with rules is great! It can be a mini-hobby & pathway to game design.
- It can provide a customized experience better suited for the table like Wil said.
- It could be a sign the rules are unclear or don't deliver the experience expected or promised.
(Good to know for me as a designer)

Cases for playing with no mods:
- First time playing. Getting a feel for how all the rules tie together.
- The table likes the rules as written.
- It's a tournament (or other format where consistency is important across tables)
