Nice analysis.

Are the prices quotes by Ember really just for the gas generation without the cost of the gas plant?

If so how do they get their money back on the cost of the plant?

Isn’t that what the German Chancellor was hinting at? Get to 95% but help others with the cheaper easier part to reduce 95% before we spend billions on the last 5%?

Thanks that makes sense.

Good news. What services are these longer duration batteries now providing to the UK grid?

I would agree with that.

It would be nice if electricity costs could come down for businesses and consumers.

Efficiency gains help somewhat but for a heat pump for example currently at the margin.

So how do we bring electricity costs down?

Seems a never ending spiral of costs without some cheaper long duration storage.

But then would gas get even less share and have to charge even more to get a return on investment when they are called on even less frequently. Perhaps only during wind and sun lulls?

Then would this really bring down the overall cost of electricity?

Thanks very much for this. So in order to bring the price down I could see things like pumped hydro or batteries filling some of the gaps and creating competition which may bring prices down a bit.

Thanks for your response. Yes please do elaborate. This is a huge debate and I’d really like to be as informed as I can be.

@adambell.bsky.social I wonder if you would mind giving your opinion on this graph which is doing the rounds on X

My assumption is that the link between wholesale gas prices & electricity prices is broken due to the CCGTs charging what they can for balancing. So wholesale price isn’t a good guide?
