Need a mental break? Avoid your cellphone Using a cellphone to take a break during mentally challenging tasks does not allow the brain to recharge effectively and may result in poorer performance, researchers found.

Many of us check our phones during a break.

I do too.

But your brain stays "on".

Focus experts advise us to do nothing so we can recharge. Feels boring (it is!), but your brain will thank you.

Discrimination Against People With Disabilities in Hiring and Strategies to Reduce It: Evidence From Resumes

People with disabilities are discriminated against when applying for jobs.

Ask most employers, and theyโ€™ll say: โ€œ๐–๐ž ๐๐จ๐งโ€™๐ญ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐ซ๐ข๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ž.โ€

So we tested it. We sent 1,500 real job applications.

The result? There is a gap between what employers SAY and what they DO.

Not the smartest people become leaders. Itโ€™s the ones who talk the most.

This is known as the Babble Hypothesis.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Their finding:
Regardless of intelligence or expertise, groups often pick the person who talks the most as their leader.

New article in JPART on administrative burdens.

We examine how collaborating with citizens can help break down such burdens.

The paper speaks to debates in public administration on policy design and citizenโ€“state interactions.

A graph titled "Cost of Transport" showing the relationship between body weight (in kilograms) and energy consumption for distance traveled (calories per gram per kilometer) for various animals and machines. It highlights that a person on a bicycle ranks first in efficiency.

A person on a bicycle is by far the most energy-efficient among animals and machines per distance traveled relative to body weight. The bicycle is magic.

๐Ÿ’ป Laptops are great, but not during class. ๐Ÿ’ป

Laptops are the standard in classrooms. This needs to change.

New meta-analysis of 24 experiments shows that handwriting will lead to higher grades for students.

So this 2017 NYTimes op-ed by @dynarski.bsky.social is even truer today.

Note that the vertical axis in the figure starts at 46, not 0. But even when it would have, the results are the same (although less pronounced in a figure): working from home hurts performance evaluations, and it's more detrimental for women.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Working from home results in lower performance ratings๐Ÿ“ฃ

Managers give lower performance ratings to teleworkers than to office workers, even when holding performance constant.

Female teleworkers face an even greater disadvantage.

We show that Digital Transformation Leadership comprises two dimensions.

First, a Strategic dimension: how managers develop a vision, foster collaboration, and consider public preferences.

Second, an Operational dimension: how managers guide employees, internal processes, and outputs.

However, there was no reliable way to measure how public leaders are directing such transformations.

We therefore validated a Digital Transformation Leadership scale.
