18.11.2025 22:12 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0As a software architect, psychology is one of my super powers for this reason. We live in a world where the people building some of the most influential tools of thought are the very same people who refuse to acknowledge the difficulty of the problem or hold the human mind in sufficient reverence

14.10.2025 04:25 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1i may be misinterpreting this but i'm always taken aback a bit when people say decentralization is a "theoretical" thing because it is very much "what actually makes networks resilient" -- centralization is a single point of failure and decentralization is redundancy

12.10.2025 13:02 โ ๐ 55 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 1A long time ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a profound idea. At the end of the day, every human organization only has one true purpose. To ensure its own continued existence. All other activities are ultimately about that.
11.10.2025 02:47 โ ๐ 109 ๐ 11 ๐ฌ 5 ๐ 0We need to talk about one of the greatest line reads in the history of video games.
DIE THE DEATH
SENTENCE TO DEATH
GREAT EQUALIZER IS THE DEATH
waluigi has their own island and they filled it with mechanical contraptions and piranha plants. ain't no way waluigi is implicated in anything like this
12.10.2025 10:08 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0yes but being odd is a good thing
09.10.2025 06:29 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0in closing: you can strive for a *more complete* view but you will never have the *complete* view. having a complete view requires everything be public and indexed. that's not something everyone wants. on the flip side we don't per se "tolerate" harassers finding us via search and having no privacy.
08.10.2025 05:56 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0ultimately that's what decentralization *is* -- you no longer have a single source of truth. there are only claims, which you can accept or not. ideally you could verify claims.
in atproto that "unacceptable experience" would involve not sending records to certain relays, never arriving at appviews
really, the count is not the *total* number, it's the *verifiable* number. this is a distinction that gets left out as too "confusing" to most people but it's very important. if i claim 12 likes and you can only find 2 of them, which number do you show? it's not a lie if there are 10 private likes.
08.10.2025 05:56 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0for the classical decentralized network, consider the web. even google doesn't have a complete global search. what you see is a function of what you're aware of and what isn't being hidden from you along the way. even trivial things like like/follow counts are deceptive in their complexity.
08.10.2025 05:56 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0i don't think that stuff is "tolerated", it's just what happens when you go from a closed world (everything is known) to an open world (there might always be more information). accepting that some things might not be known is how you get privacy. peers can withhold information or provide false info.

08.10.2025 05:18 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0that said: I think the "it's not fascism unless they're good at it" brand of analysis probably isn't the move

06.10.2025 02:48 โ ๐ 207 ๐ 54 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 2two different "admonition" boxes. the box has rounded corners and the left border is slightly less transparent. in the upper left corner, a colored circle with an icon in it extends slightly beyond the bounds of the box. the title of each admonition is vertically centered compared to the circle. the first admonition uses a yellow circle and a warning triangle to represent "warning" class admonitions. the second admonition uses a light steel blue circle and a circle-i icon to represent "information" class admonitions. the warning admonition is titled "<cite> is for works cited, not people attributed", and the information admonition is "criticism regarding the above point".
that looks nice :o

in the most vocal case, the off-platform material is extremely verifiable (and admitted to court). the identity is confirmed (and self-asserted). what more context do you need?

as to "where the data is stored", dns A/AAAA records point to an IP address where you can send HTTP requests. this is functionally equivalent to did `service` entries which point to your PDS where you can send XRPC requests.
