in closing: you can strive for a *more complete* view but you will never have the *complete* view. having a complete view requires everything be public and indexed. that's not something everyone wants. on the flip side we don't per se "tolerate" harassers finding us via search and having no privacy.

ultimately that's what decentralization *is* -- you no longer have a single source of truth. there are only claims, which you can accept or not. ideally you could verify claims.

in atproto that "unacceptable experience" would involve not sending records to certain relays, never arriving at appviews

really, the count is not the *total* number, it's the *verifiable* number. this is a distinction that gets left out as too "confusing" to most people but it's very important. if i claim 12 likes and you can only find 2 of them, which number do you show? it's not a lie if there are 10 private likes.

for the classical decentralized network, consider the web. even google doesn't have a complete global search. what you see is a function of what you're aware of and what isn't being hidden from you along the way. even trivial things like like/follow counts are deceptive in their complexity.

i don't think that stuff is "tolerated", it's just what happens when you go from a closed world (everything is known) to an open world (there might always be more information). accepting that some things might not be known is how you get privacy. peers can withhold information or provide false info.

as to "where the data is stored", dns A/AAAA records point to an IP address where you can send HTTP requests. this is functionally equivalent to did `service` entries which point to your PDS where you can send XRPC requests.
