How Much Did It Cost to Paint a Pompeii Room Egyptian Blue? The price of covering a room in the prized pigment was equal to between 50% and 90% of a Roman legionary's annual salary, a new study estimates.

My latest for @hyperallergic.com is on Egyptian Blue—& a new study by Mishael Quraishi which prices out the Roman cost & manual labor needed to paint the “Blue Room” at Pompeii. Shout outs & thx: @hilarybeckertxny.bsky.social , @diffendale.bsky.social , @chapps.bsky.social, @valentinadl.bsky.social!

Photo of Minimus and Silvius, the Latin mice, outside the mouse hole. Silvius is standing on the doorstep, having just opened one of the double doors. There's a bronze bell on the wall to the left of the door, and a bronze door knocker to the right. The knocker is shaped like a cat's face with a ring in its mouth. Minimus is holding the ring. There's a name plate on the wall which reads CAVUM MINIMI, Minimus' mousehole.

murus anticus cavi renovatus est (The front wall of the mousehole has been renewed). Silvius sonum tintinnabuli et pulsationis audit, et ianuam aperit (Silvius hears the sound of the bell and of knocking, and he opens the door). salve tata! (Hello, Daddy!)

Phyllonorycter anderidae is a seldom recorded species, these were the first moths to emerge from various leaf mines collected last autumn. Mines were on seedling birch on lowland bog in Fife, it's a new species for the vice-county and also new for me.

I feel like it should be more widely unpopular that in the past year we’ve witnessed the creation of an American Stasi required to meet arrest quotas who utilize an AI technology created by a company run by a sweaty raisin of a billionaire who thinks Greta Thunberg is the antichrist.

‘Stop the light going out and fund the World Service now’, BBC journalists urge government Journalists at the BBC World Service have urged the UK government to deliver a proper funding agreement amid reports of a real-terms budget freeze.

Members at BBC World Service have urged the UK government to deliver a proper funding agreement and "end this annual uncertainty by enshrining a long-term, predictable, and sufficient, inflation-linked funding settlement for the World Service in the next BBC Charter."

Enclosed fields above Throstle Nest, Bewerley by David Martin CC BY-SA 2.0

🧵One of the pivotal factors in the tale of rural poverty was the shifting landscape of agriculture. Yorkshire, primarily an agrarian society, witnessed the enclosure movement during this time, altering the very fabric of land ownership and utilisation. This movement, while promoting efficiency and

Iran’s cultural heritage in the crossfire – expert explains what has been damaged and what could be lost When war damages historic monuments, more than architecture is lost.

"When war damages historic monuments, more than architecture is lost. Fragments of cultural memory that have endured for centuries disappear with them. [...] Once destroyed, these monuments cannot truly be replaced."

My aunt received a love letter from a French exchange student in which he claimed to have thunk of her during the night. It impressed me deeply, obviously, since she’s over eighty now and I still remember it. With glee.

Had a great day out researching the habitat of the wild daffodil as part of a reintroduction project. The species is extinct from its historic environment—ancient meadows and woodland—but survives in farm gardens as an ornamental plant.

The Most Dangerous Corporation in America? The AI surveillance state is real — and it's being built by Palantir.

Palantir Technologies raked in $1.5 BILLION in income last year — including from lucrative taxpayer-funded DHS contracts — and paid ZERO federal income tax.

It's fast becoming the most dangerous and least accountable corporation in America.

Last week Sheffield Council installed this plaque at the Town Hall entrance sited under the historic Kinder Scout trespass plaque. Most people don't realise it, but the Sheffield Street Tree campaign will in the future be classed as just as historic. Proud to have been a part of it

We really could not be more proud of the leaders who make the beating heart of Team Mariposa.

Paul's involvement with the fight to save Sheffield's street trees, and to plant valuable, wildlife-friendly new trees for the future, is an example to us all.
