Exciting times on Anchor Island as we check #kakapo nests for hatching. We’re letting eggs hatch in nests to reduce management intensity. Last night I found these two newly-hatched chicks in Konini’s nest, along with a fertile egg I carried back under a lunar eclipse. #kakapo2026 #conservation

Native of woods, scrub & hedgerow, embankments & road verges, an important element of the ground flora. It supports 51 species of invert as a larval host, of which 14 are Coleoptera, 30 Lepidoptera.

Primula vulgaris supports nearly 40 species of invertebrate as a larval host, & most of them are Lepidoptera.

Ficaria verna, Lesser Celandine, invert associates. Blooms in woods, hedgerows, verges, on grassy banks, March to May, supporting 15 species as a larval host.
But also a valuable nectar & pollen source for emerging hoverflies, & pollen beetles.

Slender Pond Snail (Omphiscola glabra), highly characteristic of seasonal pool complexes on remnants of common land in Vale of York/Humberhead Levels. Globally Near Threatened. Typically occurs with the more widespread White-lipped Ramshorn (Anisus leucostoma) & Moss Bladder-snail (Aplexa hypnorum).
