Skinny trees surround the cross country ski trail. You can see the tracks by the blue lines in the middle of the white part where the snow is in the forefront of the painting a tree came down mostly the trunk. It’s brown with dark brown and white on top of that from the snow. Sunset comes quickly. Orange yellow light is in the horizon line toward the back center left of the painting. This ski trail has this unique quality where the trees bend over, making the skier feel like they’re skiing through a cathedral of trees. It’s a new growth forest with skinny limbs bending over into a tunnel. The sky is blue with clouds behind that or maybe it’s snow blowing about. All of the skinny trees have snow on the right side of them, where the snow has blown and detached itself.

I painted this watercolor enhanced with acrylic paint January 11, 2025. It’s based on a favorite cross-country ski trail in western Pennsylvania. The trees form a tunnel like this. It’s wonderful.

A mixed media painting of many layers that were scraped off and repainted. The bottom third is a green meadow with yellow and orange flowers in high grasses. A hillside is beyond that with mostly dark shades of green in the middle horizontal third. The top third is a mountain range in an ultramarine blue with silver leaf interpreted as glowing lights. Behind that is a lilac colored mountain range, farther back under a deep blue sky. The light could be fading causing the darkness of sky or it could be early morning.

Mixed Media. Title: You Decide. A place from my imagination. It reminds me of places in Utah and Ward, Colorado where I’ve hiked.

This abstract painting came from my imagination. Blue mountains, greenish-blue hillsides dots of yellow in the green fields, yellow grassy foreground with a thin meadow of orange color. Above the mountains a sunset of yellow and orange setting in.

This was last night’s painting of the day. I painted in Laurel Summit about an hour from Pittsburgh, PA. This acrylic painting came from my imagination. It’s either mountains or sea. Which is it for you?

This watercolor is from a path where my sister walks her dog. The area was once a private golf course and is now maintained by volunteers and Allegheny County Land Trust just near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Walking here feels like traveling to a special place in nature. Like a fiction writer, I intersect truth and imagination. The blue was the paved area, with tall grasses and goldenrod bordering the trail. The paved area curved sharply at the end. A dead tree stood tall in its magnificence and spotted and striped colors, browns, reds, and whites coursed its trunk and limbs looking as if a trunk grew out of the green foliage. I didn’t have ready access to water other than a tiny spray bottle to drench 2 paintbrushes, & the 2 watercolor palettes. Result: paint colors are darker and richer. The path is surrounded by mostly green - high grasses with touches of orange- i could never get my brush clean enough for the yellow paint I swirled my brush in to dot the goldenrod. Behind all the plant life golden light from the end of the day pushed the lighter greens into focus, giving me a gift of light and how it transforms the scenery. The sky on the right was that grayish-blue, the kind you think a storm is imminent but never comes, the patches of blue sky and sun dominating behind the green leafed trees. This is my painting of the day, a 15 minute (or more) practice to be consistent and be at peace.

This watercolor was painted on a path where people walk their dogs just off the Churchill exit in Pittsburgh, PA. My sister walks my furry nephew here.
