It’s being said a lot that the shadow of Iraq is hanging over Keir Starmer and the Labour Party during this Iran crisis.

It absolutely should. What’s remarkable is how little much of the British media and the rest of politics seem to be thinking about it at all, or learning its lessons.

It’s a mark of the poverty of thought of these characters that they have to take a brilliant writer’s imagination and use her novel as an instruction manual. And only after it became a TV series because they don’t read. They can’t even invent their own fascist dictatorship.

All the men (and a few women, let’s not forget those) did, centrists and right-wing populist alike. It’s just that there are no consequences for the latter. It’s quite clear that Epstein had no preference re left/right/centre. He just hated women and wanted to burn it all down.

Am Ende lachen die Populisten Die mühsame Aufarbeitung der Epstein-Akten hat in Europa bislang härtere Konsequenzen als in den USA. Die Profiteure sind nicht die Opfer.

In Europe, the publication of the Epstein files above all helps right-wing populists. Which was probably the plan. www.stern.de/politik/ausl...

Brilliant piece by my colleague @christineheuer.bsky.social on the rise of the far right in the UK, and on who finances them. In German, sorry!

it has helped me tremendously to think of Donald Trump as someone whose greatest success and primary achievement has been as a reality TV star

like reality TV, there are a lot of sudden shocking developments and rule-changes. the only principle is: keep it moving, keep eyes on us.

Stranger Things The 1980s Nostalgia of Trump's Foreign Policy is probably going to end up, like Stranger Things, as a horror show.

Trump is probably focused on the money he wrongly thinks he'll make from Venezuelan oil. But he's not a details guy and nobody has thought through the details. Essentially, the US has taken over Venezuela by mistake. Stranger things have happened, but not many.
