Storytelling for Justice symposium flyer
Text describes the Storytelling for Justice symposium, noting that speakers will share old and new knowledges and provoke conversation about how to story and listen in ways that disrupt and interrupt dominant knowledge dynamics, offering alternative, more-than-academic ways of knowing and engaging with communities and commonalities. Keynote speaker is Dr Margaret Harvey.
Looking forward to taking part in #StorytellingForJustice in 2 weeks time - if anyone else in the northern hemisphere fancies doing an all-nighter in the digital realm (the other papers look amazing, worth it!) registration is here & free: shorturl.at/9SPt5

Obstetric violence is such a horrible, disturbing and heartbreaking thing to read about. Would love to know if Briance terms this as being βexamined internallyβ and if she recalls it through any sensorial descriptions?

He is not just attacking βdiversity initiativesβ. He is being racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic -
all these- clearly implying that a diverse workforce is not as capable or efficient as that made of white heterosexual men. He is disgusting.

Excellent article about the rift between Holocaust scholars. This rift also unfurles into personal attacks, censorship and has a far reaching impact on the interpretation of the past.

Something that has stripped me of almost all hope for the future has been the fact that Israeli soldiers can openly confess to horrendous war crimes in an Israeli newspaper and people will still deny that Palestinians are being exterminated.

ergo, itβs not an issue of speakability - sheβs spoken! sheβs spoken as bluntly/codified as itβs possible to speak & yet not been heard. the problem is audiences being unwilling to hear stories that disrupt patriarchal socio-cultural norms around the monsterised rapist. so yes read Sophieβs piece!

for example, a woman recalls being raped by a midwife (yes, she says raped) but b/c of reluctances to recognise that women and medical professionals perpetrate sexual violence, & the euphemistic veneer of banality (my term) of βbody searchesβ, her disclosure of finger rape (my term) is not heard

this is a personal gripe I have with a lot of research on sexual violence during the Holocaust - the βit happened to meβ testimonies ARE out there in spades, suggesting that rather than focus so much on the speakability of these stories, there is work to be done re their *hearability*

GisΓ¨le Pelicot doesnβt conceive of her now ex-husband or the other men who raped her as βbad applesβ, aberrations...
great piece, especially what Sophie writes about audiences hearing (or not) disclosures of sexual violence: βan essential feature of male power is being allowed to choose not to listen β to reason, to conscience, to evidence, to a womanβs testimony, whatever its formβ
