After 2 intense inspiring weeks from the payload review colocation to the Science Study Team meetings, I’m deeply proud of this team. We’re now standing at the doorstep of the final presentation & mission selection review. M‑MATISSE feels closer than ever! Really great hard work!
✨Paper alert✨ Thanks to MEX and TGO talking between them, a region of Mars’ ionosphere never explored before was sampled during a major solar storm. A fantastic work lead by Jacob Parrott! M-MATISSE will have this capability in much larger scale to explore the so far unseen!
Not sure how but 2 years have passed between these two pictures! It is now time to say “see you soon” to Rong Tian from Wuhan University, an amazing PhD student that soon will graduate! Very proud of you!✨✨
Ready for session P41D - Space Environments of Unmagnetized or Weakly Magnetized Solar System Bodies and the Effects of Space Weather on these Systems! #AGU25
Good discussions at #AGU2025 Space Weather session for the Moon and Mars, where I presented @science.esa.int M-MATISSE M7 candidate and how we plan to tackle Mars Space Weather
Fantastic BepiColombo @science.esa.int week at @physicsuol.bsky.social ! Best way of almost ending the year with two full days of Mercury and cruise discussions at home! 🤩 (the “thing” in the middle is our fantastic X-Ray MIXS instrument on Bepi!!)
If you are at AGU next week and want to know more about how to publish at JGR-Planets, sign up to meet with Editor Beatriz Sanchez-Cano on 16 December at #AGU25!

Thanks a lot Jim!! 🎉
Thank you so much!!! ❤️
Hihi maybe! 😂😂
Thanks Jonny!!
I still can’t believe they said my name!! I got the Global Space Award 2025 in the category of Science Breakthrough for my leadership of the M-MATISSE mission concept to Mars! A really wonderful night! Next step is to do our super best for the mission to be selected in June 2026!
Last M-MATISSE progress meeting at @science.esa.int before we submit all documentation for the Mission Selection Review. Everything almost ready! 😁✨🛰🛰✨

I’m truly delighted to share that I’ve been shortlisted as a finalist for the Global Space Awards in the Science Breakthrough Award category for my work leading the ESA M7 mission candidate M-MATISSE! It was announced yesterday from the stratosphere!! A huge thanks to the team!!
Very proud of my brother who is now a Doctor!! He just passed his PhD defense and obtained Summa Cum Laude (with highest praise!). There is another Dr Sanchez-Cano now! (Although of avian influenza viruses….). We are very proud of him!
Thanks for the great session and fav discussion!
If you are at the @esww2025.bsky.social today, do not miss our Plenary Panel Session on Mars-Moon Space Weather! We are looking forward to seeing you!
Fantastic first part of the week at ESAC at the BepiColombo @science.esa.int Science Working Team meeting… just a bit over a year before arriving to Mercury! ✨✨ very exciting, and always great to go back home, even if just for a few days!
✨✨Paper alert ✨✨ to start the weekend with some reading! This time an invited review of Mars’ plasma system at Oxford Encyclopedia. Good weekend!

🐱 Our newest student! 🐱
Learning about the vast current flowing along the Earth's magnetic field to the ionosphere is as captivating for cats as it is for our students. It took a seat and stayed for the lecture as @bscredrojo.bsky.social explained the "Birkeland currents" to our 3rd years! 😻
A new student has joined my Space Environment class today at @physicsuol.bsky.social Even sat in a chair for the full hour! It seems students also enjoyed this new way of teaching!
Today I gave a seminar on my latest research work at Imperial College London, and was really amaze by these spectacular views of London! 😍✨✨
It is time for our session!! Do not miss the most ionized session at #EPSC2025!!!
Do you want to know more about M-MATISSE? The team is at the #EPSC2025 conference and we will present different aspects of the mission, starting this afternoon with three consecutive talks, and a open session on Wednesday for all
Participants!
Here we go, final lecture of the week, this time at @unibirmingham.bsky.social for the Space Physics STFC summer course. This time talking about our great Solar System! ✨✨
