Even at a time full of strange and enigmatic reptiles, Helveticosaurus was one of the most bizarre species in the Triassic. It specifically lived during the middle Triassic in what is now Europe

Black-and-white pencil sketches of four prehistoric synapsids: three different gorgonopsians in a column on the far left side of the page, and then a scene of two Hippidion taking up the rest of the space. The top gorgonopsian is Dinogorgon, rolling around on the ground happily. The middle gorgonopsian is the small Viatkogorgon, swimming above the viewer with a temnospondyl in its mouth. The bottom gorgonopsian is a bust of the newly named Njalila, just yawning. The two Hippidion that take up most of the paper are a pair of stallions fighting in the open habitats of the high Andes. One of them is in the process of kicking the other’s snout, likely breaking the long nasal bone characteristic of this genus. In the distance, a Spectacled Bear stands up to get a better view of the battle.

Tonight’s flocking-together #Paleostream was nothing but synapsids, three gorgonopsians in a row (Dinogorgon, Viatkogorgon, and Njalila) and then the Pleistocene South American horse Hippidion. #paleoart #sciart #permian #pleistocene

a Dinogorgon lays on its left side, back facing the camera, around it is an abstract environment of oranges and yellows, it casts a blue shadow on the ground behind it

Dinogorgon is a gorgonopsid (saber toothed animals closer related to mammals than reptiles) which had very large jaw muscles to take down large prey

two Viatkogorgon cool off in a shaded body of water framed by dunes, a dead woody plant is behind them

Viatkogorgon is a kind of gorgonopsida (saber toothed animals closer related to mammals than reptiles) which was quite small (around the size of the average house cat) it had a more slender snout than other gorgonopsids

a Njalila is seen in left lateral (side) view with a person (my sona) behind it for scale (i am 5' 4" (~163cm tall))

Njalila is a kind of gorgonopsida (saber toothed animals closer related to mammals than reptiles) which was on the smaller end (the size of the small dog) it had a robust jaw for taking down prey

a Hippidion looks into the camera with its head tilted to its right with its tongue sticking out at the camera, blurry gold coloured hearts are seen in the background

Hippidion is an extinct kind of horse which resembles modern horses, however, possesses large muscle attatchment sites on its head for a large nose and top-lip muscles. some reconstruct it with a tapir-like arrangement, i decided to reconstruct it with anatomy resembling a moose's
