Temnodontosaurus trigonodon
#Ichthyursday week 1
In addition to the chondroderms, the flipper also has horizontal ridges and a flexible "winglet" on its tip. Together these adaptations would have reduced acoustic and hydrodynamic disturbance, making Temnodontosaurus a stealthy deep-water predator.
17.07.2025 17:49 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Narrow cartilaginous structures called chondroderms line the trailing edge of the flipper. In life, these would have greatly reduced the fluid turbulence produced as the ichthyosaur moved, very similarly to the adaptations owl feathers have for silent flight!
17.07.2025 17:49 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Congrats to Lindgren et al. on their article "Adaptations for stealth in the wing-like flippers of a large ichthyosaur". A remarkable fossil preserving soft tissue of the flipper of ichthyosaur Temnodontosaurus revealed never before seen traits.
