03.02.2026 00:36 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Disc-shaped fossils with concentric grooves scattered through a limestone block.
Image of the apex of the Great Pyramid, taken from the base of the southeast corner. The layers of massive blocks of limestone composing the pyramid are clearly visible. The pyramid is set against a sunny blue sky.
I've seen fossils in some remarkable places, but this takes the prize: the benthic foram Nummulites in the base of the Great Pyramid of Giza. These massive blocks were quarried from the Eocene Mokkatam Formation when a relictual population of woolly mammoths still lived on Wrangel Island.

This is one of the most absurd things I've ever seen in a crystal shop. Top tier impulse purchase.

02.01.2026 19:37 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I try to get a skeleton sketch or two done any time I go to the AMNH. It's a great opportunity to practice life drawings.

Disclaimer: this skeletal is far from perfect. Good reconstructions for most fish, especially extinct ones, are few and far between, so I tried my best to piece it together from the few references I had. That being said, I'm quite happy with how it turned out!

Aulopiforms, both extinct and extant, have very diverse arrangements of these gape-forming bones. They tell us a lot about the evolutionary development of their feeding methods.

Cimolichthys nepaholica was a Late Cretaceous Big Ol' Fishโข. A lot of our well-known Mesozoic ray-finned fish represent early-diverging groups that have no modern close relatives, but not this guy! Cimolichthys belongs to the order Aulopiformes, which is still around today in the form of...
