To me it feels like a difference between a capitalised or lower case “L” in leader. You exhibit leadership qualities and capabilities through role-modelling, advocacy, facilitation of constructive discourse, etc. That’s importantly different from leadership that focuses on the individual’s status.

I think this shift in terminology has come from the proliferation of the “micro celebrity” with social media/YouTube, the commodification of our bodies and sex into “content” by fan sites, and how both of these play on the underlying anxiety of a lot of gay men of being universally attractive.
