Luna, a blue roan mare who looks black in her winter coat, reaches forward with her nose and mouth to examine the spearmint I have in my hand. She has an inquisitive, goofy look on her face with ears forward. Our donkey is barely visible in the background to the left of the picture.
A mint in these trying times, perhaps? π¬

Luna, a blue roan mare, being taken at a walk on the line. She is completely visible and moving clockwise. She doesnβt look terribly thrilled, but not terribly bothered either. Her croup is really starting to roan out but her neck, not so much. She wears a gray pad with a standard looking roping saddle that has a light tan pommel.
Little blue filly coming into some work (slowly)! She just had some misc tasks today with no real goal, but she did well with that!

A photo of Strawberry, mostly her head, but she is walking towards me so a leg is visible, wearing a pink fly mask that has a nose cover. Strawberry is a young, graying red base made. She has a pretty wide blaze that goes all the way down her nose, thus the need for a nose cover fly mask. Her ears are up as she looks at me holding up the phone.
Picture of Flame, a chestnut arabian, though it is hard to see the dishy snout with this fly mask on, wears a mask of the same brand to also cover his blaze. His is a reddish purple with ear covers as well as a nose cover.

A blue canvas with purple drawings of hooves split up into "weird" and "natural". The weird side includes a bunch of drawings of mammal limbs ending in an awkward dark, shiny cylinder. The cylinder occasionally has a metal, U shaped horseshoe attached. The bottom is an ambiguous dark circle with no features. I derisively compare it to a plunger. There are many frownie faces. The natural side shows a normal horse's hoof, which has the cushy padded heel bulbs on the back, mostly similar to other mammalian feet, but with a nail covering the toe. It is more square and less tall and rectangular from the front. On the bottom, it's circular with a triangle in the middle coming from the heel bulbs and pointing towards the toe.
Someday I'll make real tutorials instead of DRAW GOOD NOT BAD but for now I'm busy with school and just trying to dispel the idea of a horse hoof being a weird meat can

Toast approaching a young mare who is standing at the fence off camera. He randomly gets very excited (since he is a stud colt) when mares justβ¦exist. Toast is a grulla champagne, a light-colored horse with darker brown points. He is properly βtrit-trottingβ up to the iron fence, showing off his Spanish breed conformation proper. He would make such a nice little dressage pony, lol. His front left is extended forward, with the diagonal back following. The front leg is nice and straight out. His neck is up and arched. This is the kind of behavior slash movements that (in part) inspired dressage.

Wildfire, a red mare, stands in profile and is very pregnant. She has some ventral edema (swelling) on her belly which is pretty normal this far into pregnancy. She is a stout, reining bred mare. She has a relaxed expression despite the massive belly, this picture taken after just eating breakfast. She wears magenta fly boots here. You can kinda see Zira, a bay mare, also pregnant, peeking from behind Wildfire. Strawberry can also be seen on the bale at the left edge of the picture.
340 DAYS IN FOAL FOR WILDFIRE!!! 340 days is the average gestation length in horses; she really could have this baby very soon!

A picture from directly in front of Toast apparently receiving the best scratches of his life on his chest. He is a grulla champagne colt, which gives him slightly darker fur on his face, making an almost lavender color on the nose. He is tilting his head and pulling his lips into a parrot mouth shape. The lense focuses heavily on his snoot as he gently writhes. Flame can be sort of seen behind him, a chestnut gelding.
Toast reaches nirvana during scratchies. This is a photo of him sticking his head up straight into the air. The majesty of this stallion knows no bounds. The eye is squinted in thoughtful ecstasy as he giraffe necks.

title of post: βHorses learn more effectively when experiencing positive emotionsβ
The goal of this study was to explore how emotions impact learning in horses.
34 riding horses from ages 3 to 21 were studied; half of the horses were given Synthetic Equine Appeasing Hormone (EAP) while the other half were not. Then, researchers analyzed the horsesβ cognition and emotions in a reward-based learning task in order to determine if emotion affects learning ability.
Results showed that horses given the equine appeasing hormone (EAP) who had a more positive mental state also performed better on the learning task, giving more correct responses than horses not given EAP who had a more negative mental state.
The EAP group was correct 93% of the time, while the non-EAP/placebo group was only correct 58% of the time.
The task seemed to be equally physiologically arousing for horses given the appeasing hormone and horses not given the hormone. Emotional state did not seem to have an effect on heart rate or heart rate variability. Both groups showed a significant increase in baseline heart rate during the learning task, indicating some physiological arousal.
Made for my insta but figured Iβd share here too in case anybody finds it interesting! (3 more slides cont. in replies)

An older pic of Wildfireβs udder. Itβs definitely bigger than normal, but most is likely edema.
The latest picture of Wildfireβs udder! Definitely more swollen, so probably more edema, but weβre getting closer to the foaling window with this progress.
Mar 1st βΆοΈ today! Wildfire is gearing up slowly for foaling! Most of this is probably edema, but sheβs definitely progressing.

We Are All Less Safe Today, as NOAA Gets Hit With Mass Firings
Splinter is your home for news and opinions that challenge power in our political and economic system that's becoming more unhinged each and every day.
NOAA returns/produces so much more money to the American economy than it costs, no stories about any of this should allow them the absolutely bullshit "savings" framing
