We were in court yesterday fighting the unlawful detention of immigrants at the new Everglades detention center without access to legal counsel.
Everyone has a right to their day in court, especially when challenging their detention at this appalling facility.
The footage of Robert Brooks being beaten to death by prison guards at Marcy Correctional spurred cries for reform to end the culture of impunity for prison guards.
But right when it seemed like guards might face accountability and true oversight, corrections officers began their illegal strike:
At least 7 incarcerated people died in February when thousands of NYS prison guards walked off the job in a wildcat strike. Many never returned to work after the strike ended.
4 months later, thousands of jobs remain vacant, and prisons have had to cancel summer school, weekend visitation and more.

New York City, like any local government, has no obligation to redirect its resources to take on federal immigration enforcement, let alone the cruel and lawless deportation campaign the Trump regime is waging.
