(2/3) In today’s world, it’s easy to feel discouraged by division or despair. But Senator Kennedy’s words remind us that we all have the power, and the responsibility, to fight for the dignity and equality of every person.

(1/3) In honor of Senator Kennedy’s 100th birthday, we’re kicking off our #GivingTuesday campaign early. As Senator Kennedy once said, “The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to make things better.”

(2/2) In 1968, when asked how he’d like to be remembered, Sen. Kennedy quoted Camus: “Perhaps we cannot prevent this world from being a world in which children are tortured. But we can reduce the number of tortured children.” He added, “I’d like to feel I’d done something to lessen the suffering.”

N.N. v. McShane: Fighting ICE surveillance - Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights This case challenges ICE surveillance of people with electronic tracking in defiance of a judge’s order that they be released from immigration detention on bond without any further conditions.

(2/5) In N.N. v. McShane, we successfully challenged ICE’s unlawful use of GPS ankle monitoring in defiance of a judge’s order of release from immigration detention on bond without any further conditions.

Ventura Martinez v. Trump: Stopping the expansion of mandatory detention - Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights This case before the 5th Circuit defends a lower court decision holding that mandatory detention for arriving non-citizens does not apply to a long-time resident of the U.S.

(3/5) In Ventura Martinez v. Trump, we freed a longtime Maryland resident and pillar of his community from detention, stopping the government from applying a new sweeping interpretation of law that would expand mandatory detention to millions of people.

Savane v. Francis: Fighting arbitrary re-detention of asylum seekers - Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Federal court holds that ICE violated due process by detaining asylum seeker it had previously released on parole without first giving written notice.

(4/5) In Savane v. Francis, we freed a 22-year-old asylum seeker arrested without any notice of the reason why and locked in detention for months in violation of the Constitution, reinforcing that ICE can’t detain people indefinitely without justification.

(5/5) I’m so proud of our team and our partners for their tireless work defending human rights in the courts and beyond. Each of these victories is a reminder of what’s possible when we stand up for the rule of law and human dignity.

(4/4) "[This move] strips away an additional level of oversight for the human rights abuses happening every day under this administration," said Sarah Decker, our U.S. Senior Staff Attorney.

(3/4) The meeting was part of the UN’s Universal Periodic Review, a process where all 193 member states have their human rights records examined every 4–5 years. It’s extremely rare for a country not to attend.

(2/4) The US govt was supposed to submit a self-assessment and appear before other nations and NGOs to discuss issues like Pres. Trump's immigration crackdown, LGBTQ+ rights rollbacks, and the death penalty. It did neither.

(1/4) A UN review of the US govt's human rights record opened today w/out the US in the room. A State Dept. spokesperson defended the absence, saying, "as primary champions of individual liberties, we will not be lectured about our human rights record."

(4/4) ICE’s own policies require timely medical care, access to prescriptions, and emergency hospitalization when needed. In reality, people held at the Buffalo Federal Detention Center report going weeks or even months without essential treatment.

(3/4) One of our clients, who suffers from end-stage renal disease, missed a dialysis session while detained at the Buffalo ICE jail. As a result, he had to be rushed to Buffalo’s Erie County Medical Center for emergency treatment.

(2/4) The Buffalo Federal Detention Center in Batavia, NY, holds up to 650 people and has no full-time doctor or dentist on-site. It has been operating over capacity for months, with more than 150 people waiting for outside medical care.

New York’s Largest ICE Prison Dogged by Allegations of Shoddy Medical Care “It's just freak luck that no one has died in Batavia in the last two years," one advocate said of medical treatment in the ICE prison.
