Tonight:
We are less than a week away from the Academy Awards, and a number of key categories are still very much undecided. @stevehackman1.bsky.social and I lock in our final predictions as to who will taste Oscar glory on Sunday night. youtu.be/KwvOmuMGnE4?...
Oh it’s an absolute car crash of unrealised potential, but I didn’t hate it
Tonight:
New movies out today in Hong Kong: SCREAM 7, THE BRIDE!, RENTAL FAMILY, ULTIMATE REVENGE, GIRLFRIENDS, SUNSHINE WOMEN’S CHOIR, DANGERS IN MY HEART, GIRLS UND PANZER, MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM HATHAWAY, KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR (7/3)
If memory serves, Hugh Jackman was cavorting around outside Times Square as part of the promo tour for this one
Today:
New translation!
This week I’ve translated the short documentary Ise-Shima, the 1949 directorial debut from the man behind Godzilla, Ishiro Honda!
Enjoy the start of one of the most famous names in movies, the first instance of underwater filming in Japan, and lots of post-war anxieties!
My long-suffering cohort @pierceconran.bsky.social & I expand our repertoire to the canon of revered Chinese auteur Zhang Yimou with an audio commentary track for Film Movement’s new release of his sumptuous sensual drama JU DOU, starring the incredible Gong Li. vinegarsyndrome.com/collections/...
An epic movie demands an epic conversation. @stevehackman1.bsky.social and I were delighted to invite my dear friend @evrimersoy.bsky.social onto the show to discuss David Lean’s indisputable masterpiece LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. One of my favourite Every Best Pictures so far: youtu.be/LGdcxqIyOPs?...
Dotonburi, Osaka - BLACK RAIN (Ridley Scott, 1989) vs last night (26 Feb,2026) #osaka #japan #filmlocation #blackrain #touristing
Sounds perfect
SCARE OUT: Zhang Yimou delivers a slickly executed but narratively muddled spy thriller about stolen secrets and traitorous agents, that never pauses long enough to ponder why they might choose to betray their country. www.scmp.com/lifestyle/en...

Today:
Absolutely fantastic movie. If you’re delving into Lee’s back cat, might I humbly suggest checking out this piece I penned a couple of years back: sc.mp/qhim
BLADES OF THE GUARDIANS: Finally found a moment to collect my thoughts on Yuen Woo Ping's visually ravishing martial arts epic, starring a boat-load of local stars including Wu Jing, Nicholas Tse, Jet Li, Max Zhang, Tony Leung Ka Fai and many more. youtu.be/V9DnRG203_s?...
Well...arguably Clarence doesn't watch it coz he's seen it already
GET SHORTY, pausing for TOUCH OF EVIL, would be a lot of fun. "You going down, Orson."
If you start TRUE ROMANCE you might never finish it, pausing for a Sonny Chiba triple feature of THE STREETFIGHTER, RETURN OF THE STREETFIGHTER and SISTER STREETFIGHTER, then later for A BETTER TOMORROW 2, and again for FREEJACK.
PANDA PLAN: THE MAGICAL TRIBE: Jackie Chan follows up his abysmal animal adventure movie with a sequel that defies the odds by being actually kinda halfway decent. www.scmp.com/lifestyle/en...
It was left a little ambiguous, but I took it that he had died. I’m sure a fan of the manhwa will no doubt correct me though 😂
BLADES OF THE GUARDIANS: slick if somewhat unexceptional sword-wielding action epic from Yuen Woo-ping follows a conventional story of wandering warriors and competing clans, elevated by some exotically staged action and a raft of glitzy guest stars. TBH gutted Nashi was recast but hey ho.
Kicking off the new year with Yuen Woo-ping’s latest
NIGHT KING: Sammi Cheng, Dayo Wong, Louise Wong and Fish Liew headline this funny, sexy and shamelessly nostalgic Chinese New Year romp about the waning glory days of TST East's nightclub scene - from Jack Ng, writer-director of A Guilty Conscience. youtu.be/VXZItmLg6y4?...
THE SNOWBALL ON A SUNNY DAY: Philip “PORT OF CALL” Yung changes tack for this patchy and rambling tale of an ordinary family whose lucky numbers might have come up. Has its moments, but unlikely to find an audience outside Hong Kong: youtu.be/3vUjQe1oyUE?...
We don’t get it here until the 26th but will be rushing to see it asap
I’m hearing that CRIME 101 is precisely this
