This Friday, I will be speaking at #TNW in Amsterdam about why “AI for Good” isn’t good enough – and what we should be doing instead.

Human-centered AI doesn’t mean just user-centered design, but also requires a community- and society-centered approach.

At today's seminar, Dave Patterson and Andy Konwinski discussed themes from their paper "Shaping AI's Impact on Billions of Lives," arguing that we are still in the early days of practical AI, and that collaborative efforts can guide AI's impact. @jlanday.bsky.social hai.stanford.edu/events/andy-...

Protest poster with white text on a black background titled “Science For The People”. Underneath, an illustration of a red upraised forearm with a fist clenching strips of computer printout tapes. Underneath the illustration, it reads “Computer Workers - Join With Other Workers. Make Computers Serve The People! Atlantic City ’71.” At the bottom, two addresses are shown: “CPP, Dolphin Center, 137A W 14th St, NY 10011” and “SESPA, Science for the People Center, 9 Walden St, J.P., Mass, 0213.” (The last digit of the ZIP code is clipped from the image.)

💯

Hallucination is totally the wrong word, implying it is perceiving the world incorrectly.

But it's generating false, plausible sounding statements. Confabulation is literally the perfect word.

So, let's all please start referring to any junk that an LLM makes up as "confabulations".
